Synopsis

In "British Sea Birds," Charles Dixon presents a meticulous and vibrant exploration of the avifauna of the British Isles, blending ornithological precision with lyrical prose. This work stands out within the nature writing genre as it not only catalogues the diverse species found along the coasts but also immerses the reader in the intricate ecosystems these birds inhabit. Dixon'Äôs illustrative style, characterized by vivid descriptions and a keen attention to the subtleties of bird behavior, situates the text in the early 20th-century environmental discourse, reflecting both the scientific rigor and burgeoning conservation consciousness of the era. Charles Dixon was an influential ornithologist and wildlife artist, whose life and work were deeply intertwined with the natural world. His background in art and science, complemented by extensive field research, provided him with the unique perspective to appreciate and document the beauty and complexity of British seabirds. Dixon'Äôs passion for avian studies, enriched by personal encounters with these species, ultimately informed his comprehensive approach in "British Sea Birds,'Äù making it both an academic resource and a labor of love. This book is highly recommended for ornithologists, nature enthusiasts, and casual readers alike who seek to deepen their understanding of British coastal wildlife. Through Dixon's insightful observations and engaging narrative, readers will not only gain a greater appreciation for seabirds but also an understanding of their ecological significance and the pressing need for conservation.

From the outset, Hynek and Vallee make their position clear: UFOs represent an unknown but real phenomenon. The far-reaching implications take us to the very edge of what we consider known and real in our physical environment. Perhaps, say the authors, UFOs signal the existence of a domain of nature as yet totally unexplored.   In this mind-stretching book, the authors sample UFO reports, including those allegedly involving humanoids, and describe the perceived patterns in the behavior of the phenomenon. They also establish a framework for further study. Where might such study lead? What can be studied, and how? What is the real nature of the UFO phenomenon? Does it originate with the actions of other intelligences in the universe? If so, where and what might they be? Does the UFO phenomenon have a purely physical explanation, or is there a vast, hidden realm that holds the solution?   In this invaluable work, we gain insight into the thinking of Hynek and Vallee’s research and investigations into UFOs, including Project Blue Book, the Pascagoula case, and the Betty and Barney Hill experience

An acclaimed science writer tells the story of cosmic projectiles that may be on a collision course with our Earth.

The impact of an asteroid led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Could another giant cosmic missile soon be heading our way? In Target Earth, acclaimed Dutch astronomy writer Govert Schilling provides a full account of what we know, and need to know, about all the extraterrestrial matter constantly bombarding our planet—from microscopic dust particles and space debris to massive meteorites, comets, and asteroids.

Drawing upon the latest scientific discoveries, Schilling explores virtually every aspect of cosmic impacts—from small meteorites to devastating collisions, from the craters that marked our planet's surface to the impacts that left their mark on other celestial bodies, and from searches for near-miss lumps of rock to ways of protecting humanity from an assault from the cosmos. Along the way, he considers near misses in the past and the possibility of others in the future and ponders the positive side of these visitations from space: If our planet had not been the target of cosmic rubble from its very formation, life on Earth would likely never have gotten started.

    Man Cattle and Veld

THE book for Profitable Ranching. A Real Ranching Revolution. Cattle Breeding. Grazing Management.
Much like nature, this book is both simple and complex. The author has taken great care to create both a simple technical guide as well as a philosophic declaration about complex human and environmental nuances, all in one volume.
Those persons who see and shape the future often say that the future is already here, it just isn't evenly distributed. I am confident that, several years from now many will look back upon this book, as well as the rest of Johann Zietsman's works, as foundational to the restoration of—and relationships between—man, cattle, and veld.
Zietsman puts forth a much-needed critique of man and his actions over the past century as well as personal stories as contra-example to the narratives we that have dominated the ranching world.
Achieving the ranch goal of maximum sustainable profit per hectare depends on breeding and feeding cattle (and all grazing species) as the grazers that they are. Efforts should be directed at raising cattle that are more efficient converters of forage, not on trying to make forage-reliant species into grain-efficient machines. Forces of nature created the animals we have, and their genetic potential will be brought out through non-selective grazing and proper supplementation.
Non-selective, time-controlled grazing, in which 80 to 95 percent of the mass of all grasses and forbs are utilized, thus pruning plants back to their crowns, is the process by which grasslands are improved in both plant vigor and species composition. I cannot overemphasize the importance of this last point—plant species diversity is promoted by time-controlled severe grazing events, whereas selective, take half leave half grazing is much more limited in improving species diversity, even leading to species narrowing in some circumstances.
