  The Black Man's Lament or How to...

  Amelia Alderson, an only child, was born on the 12th November 1769 in Norwich, England. 
  After the death of her mother on New Year’s Eve 1784 she became her father's housekeeper and hostess. 
  The young Amelia was energetic, attractive, and an admirer of fashion.  She spent much of her youth writing poetry and plays and putting on local amateur theatricals.  At 18 she had published anonymously ‘The Dangers of Coquetry’. 
  Amelia married in the spring of 1798 to the artist John Opie at the Church of St Marylebone, in Westminster, and together they lived in Berners Street where Amelia was already living. 
  Her next novel in 1801 ‘Father and Daughter’, was very popular even though it dealt with such themes as illegitimacy, a socially difficult subject for its times.  From this point on published works were far more regular.  The following year her volume ‘Poems’ appeared and was again very popular.  Novels continued to flow and she never once abandoned her social activism and her call for better treatment of women and the dispossessed in her works.  She was also keenly involved in a love of society and its attendant frills. 
  Encouraged by her husband to write more she published Adeline Mowbray in 1804, an exploration of women's education, marriage, and the abolition of slavery.  
  Her husband died in 1807 and she paused from writing for a few years before resuming with further novels and poems.  Of particular interest was her short poem ‘The Black Man's Lament’ in 1826.  Her life now was in the main spent travelling and working for charities and against slavery.  She even helped create a Ladies Anti-Slavery Society in Norwich which organised a parliamentary petition of 187,000 names of which hers was the first name. 
  After a visit to Cromer, a seaside resort on the North Norfolk coast, she caught a chill and retired to her bedroom.  
  Amelia Opie died on the 2nd December 1853 in Norwich.  She was 84.

Her poetry is characterized by wonderment at the natural environment, vivid imagery, and unadorned language. In 2007, she was declared the best-selling poet in the United States.

"Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door — Only this and nothing more." Those sonorous and somber words of Edgar Allan Poe that begin The Raven are part of most everyone's fond educational memories. Beautiful and haunting to hear and even more fun to read aloud. In this recording I have just attempted to express my enjoyment of the beauty in some favorite Poe poems. Beside The Raven, there are Alone; A Dream Within A Dream; Annabel Lee; City In the Sea; The Bells; A Dream Within a Dream; Annabel Lee; Dreamland; Evening Star; Lenore; Eldorado; A Valentine and "The Happiest Day". Hopefully listeners will enjoy hearing them half as much as I enjoyed the selfish pleasure of recording them.

  Babble is to speak rapidly and randomly as did the people at the tower of Babel when they lost their ability to speak to one another. Here in my babbling book of poetry I unite together foreign languages of different worlds scattered far and wide 
  To well describe and depict another realm far better than best-“Good, Gooder and Goodest….” A ‘Maguk Kingdom’ of babbling towers, brooks, spires and domes, one of my marvellous stories ‘Maguk World of Princess Cardinal Fairy Alice with her Lil’ cat Papillon pet Fairy Dinah’, falling through an endless Maguk Well, who travel in an ethereal adventure to the bottomless pits of the world in an unparalleled universe beyond countless Giga bytes and Decimbleters (my own made up words of poetic art) including so many funny poems inside short poetry story. One will thoroughly enjoy reading with great gusto and cherishing Alice through another spiritual perspective. 
  Therefore concluding one last example the Hebrew word ‘ayin’ which is not only the name of a Hebrew letter but also the Hebrew term for eye. My audience be like the “Hebrew Eye”- “Eyes that are windows to the soul. Looking at these poetically charged organs one may proceed to read into ‘Magic world!’- ‘THE MAGUK WELL’
