  Through the centuries every culture has produced verse to symbolize and to describe everything from everyday life, natural wonders, the human condition and even in its more hubristic moments, the crushing triumph of an enemy. 
   
  In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades. 
   
  The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy. 
   
  Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art.  Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.   
   
  In this volume we have collected verse from poets born around the Great Lakes. These huge bodies of water are really inland seas and the poetic beauty created on their shores by poets such as Paul Laurence Dunbar, Ambrose Bierce, Vachel Lindsay, James Whitcomb Riley, and Alice Carey humble and inspire us all in ways that only a poet’s words can.

  Chapter 6 - Disconnect - Disconnect is about the psychological action of disconnecting from everything that influences you in a negative manner. To not listen to the thoughts and voices of others who begin to steer your life, but instead, to focus on what you want and what you believe in.  
   
  In short, it is the disconnection from outside influences, replaced with the connection to what's inside.

Open Boundaries looks at music as a piece of the mind, something that transgresses languages, borders and backgrounds, a form of emotive connection that lets people forget, love, release, bring joy, cry, and expose their inner selves.   Croak  is a frog-and-girl opera in three parts, played out like a YouTube mashup of mid-century cartoons, all set to a contemporary pop song. It parades, mutilates and reacquaints Kermit the Frog with Girl 00010111, Michigan J. with Aristophanes, and biblical plagues with caged canaries in a vaudevillian play of time, culture, gender and narrative. Combining vivisection and classical literature, empirical observation and philosophical speculations, Sampirisi's grotesque characters splash and sparkle before moving toward their inevitable narrative end.
    
     
    
    
     
    In conversation with Samuel Beckett's  Words & Music ,  Croak  presents a negotiation between the doom and gloom of a species in crisis and the many empirical markers we attach to such creatures. Sampirisi reminds us that we are all porous in the mud of language.
