Beschreibung

"History of the United States" is a monumental synthesis of American History subsequently produced by Charles A. Beard and his wife, Mary R. Beard. This book covers a period of more than 350 years, from the beginning of American Colonization to the establishment of The League of Nations in 1920. Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948) was, with Frederick Jackson Turner, one of the most influential American historians of the first half of the 20th century. For a while he was a history professor at Columbia University but his influence came from hundreds of monographs, textbooks and interpretive studies in both history and political science. His works included a radical re-evaluation of the founding fathers of the United States, who he believed were motivated more by economics than by philosophical principles. Mary Ritter Beard (1876-1958) was an American historian and archivist, who played an important role in the women's suffrage movement and was a lifelong advocate of social justice through educational and activist roles in both the labor and woman's rights movements. Contents: The Colonial Period The Great Migration to America The Development of Colonial Nationalism Conflict and Independence The New Course in British Imperial Policy The American Revolution Foundations of the Union and National Politics The Formation of the Constitution The Clash of Political Parties The Jeffersonian Republicans in Power The West and Jacksonian Democracy The Farmers Beyond the Appalachians The Middle Border and the Great West Sectional Conflict and Reconstruction The Civil War and Reconstruction National Growth and World Politics The Political and Economic Evolution of the South Business Enterprise and the Republican Party The Development of the Great West America a World Power(1865-1900) Progressive Democracy and the World War The Spirit of Reform in America The New Political Democracy Industrial Democracy

Over seven decades, John McPhee has set a standard for literary nonfiction.

Assaying mountain ranges, bark canoes, experimental aircraft, the Swiss Army, geophysical hot spots, ocean shipping, shad fishing, and dissident art in the Soviet Union, among myriad other subjects, he has consistently written narrative pieces of immaculate design.

In Tabula Rasa, McPhee looks back at his career from the vantage point of his desk drawer, reflecting wryly upon projects he began but never completed or published. Collected and augmented, these pieces form a “reminiscent montage” of a writing life. This volume includes, among
other things, a frosty encounter with Thornton Wilder, interrogative dinners with Henry Luce, glimpses of the allure of western Spain, fireworks over the East River as seen from Malcolm Forbes’s yacht, the evolving inclinations of the Tower of Pisa, the islands in the river delta of central
California, teaching in a pandemic, and persuading The New Yorker to publish an entire book on oranges. The result is a fresh survey of McPhee’s singular planet.

‘An exquisitely-written, generous, funny, thoughtful book about the everyday joys of being alive. I love it.’ Dolly Alderton
‘J. B. Priestley is one of our literary icons of the 20th Century and it is time that we all became re-acquainted with his genius.’ Dame Judi Dench
‘My apology, my little bit of penitence, for having grumbled so much, for having darkened the breakfast table, almost ruined the lunch, nearly silence the dinner party, for all the fretting and chafing, grousing and croaking, for the old glum look and the thrust-out lower lip. So my long-suffering kinsfolk, my patient friends, may a glimmer of that delight which has so often possessed me, but perhaps too frequently in secret, now reach you from these pages.’
There are times when there doesn’t seem much to smile about. And for those times, there is this book. J. B Priestley’s 1949 classic teaches us that joy may be found in even the simplest things, and that we all have the capacity to appreciate them.
Delight comprises a series of short essays, all focussing on a single simple pleasure, from reading detective stories in bed to smoking a pipe in the bath; from ‘Cosy planning’ to the earliest summer mornings; and from mineral water in the bedrooms of foreign hotels to the smell of bacon in the morning.
Combining poignant memories of his childhood with glimpses of his interior world, panoramas of life abroad with thoughts about writing, music, theatre – some strictly personal, some universal –this highly readable book bursts with humour and literary flare on every page.
In his autobiography, Priestley takes us on a travel through his life, sharing collections of moments that brought him happiness. This non-fiction memoirs book is a top pick for anyone seeking growth.
For fans of Rory Stewart (Politics On the Edge), Marion Turner (The Wife of Bath), Felicity Cloake (Red Sauce Brown Sauce), and Ross Gay (The Book of Delights).

This true story, set in the late 1960s, follows the journey of Kozmos Lovejoy, a young artist living in San Francisco fascinated by psychedelics, spiritual mythology, and Jungian therapy. One night, he dreams of a banquet in a Renaissance castle where he meets a beautiful young woman who seems to know him and a joyous, vibrant man in a toga who blesses the feast with laughter and joy. A few weeks later, while hiking in the jungle near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, Koz discovers a spring that flows into a jungle pool. He meets the girl from his dream who shares a spiritual feast of knowledge and wisdom hidden for thousands of years in myths and metaphors buried in books and ancient texts. Thus begins Kozmos Lovejoy's journey of self-discovery, taking him from Puerto Vallarta across the American Southwest and finally high into the French Alps, where he camps with the Sufis and shares in this Feast of Knowledge. Here, the secret of stardust is revealed to him, and he gains a deeper understanding of this transformative period of awakening global consciousness. The Adventures of Kozmos Lovejoy, Exp is an epic adventure that blends Patrick O'Brien's personal experiences with a profound understanding of human potential. It celebrates a remarkable journey of self-awareness, inspiring the hearts, dreams, and imagination of those who dare surrender to the unknown by choice or chance.
