Summary

Following Say It Plain, a collection of speeches that provides “a sweeping perspective on evolving issues of black identity in the struggle for equality” (Booklist).   In “full-throated public oratory, the kind that can stir the soul”, Say It Plain collected and transcribed speeches by some of the twentieth century’s leading African American cultural, literary, and political figures. Many of the speeches were never before available in printed form (Minneapolis Star-Tribune).   Following the success of that groundbreaking volume, the Say It Loud! book adds new depth to the history of the modern struggle for racial equality and civil rights—focusing directly on the pivotal questions black America grappled with during the past four decades of resistance. With recordings unearthed from libraries and sound archives, and made widely available here for the first time, Say It Loud! includes powerful speeches by Malcolm X, Angela Davis, Martin Luther King Jr., James H. Cone, Toni Morrison, Colin Powell, and many others.   Bringing the rich immediacy of the spoken word to a vital historical and intellectual tradition, Say It Loud! illuminates the diversity of ideas and arguments pulsing through the black freedom movement.

In 1776, the United States of America was born from a document that declared all men created equal and free to choose who they serve in this world. What followed was a difficult fight against a monarchy, a fight that ended with the creation of a powerful country built on the tenets of freedom and equality. These documents are some of the foundational writings from the earliest days of the country that have shaped the United States government for centuries:The Declaration of Independence – This was the formal decree that the 13 colonies wished to separate from the rule of England. This essay declares that the rulership of England had been unjust and did not give the people living in America proper representation in the government, and declared independence from the King of Great Britain. The Constitution – The Constitution of the United States was adopted as the supreme law of the country in 1789. This document, along with its amendments, is the instruction manual for running the United States’ democracy, from outlining the three branches of government to enacting a protocol for succession of power. The Federalist Papers – The Federalist Papers were a series of articles written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison. The essays present the reasoning and logic behind each article of the Constitution, and were written to garner congressional support for its ratification. Today, they are used to assist in interpreting the intentions of the original supporters of the Constitution. The Bill of Rights – The Bill of Rights is the set of the first 10 amendments added to the Constitution. These amendments outline inalienable and natural rights for individuals, as well as stating that states have the power to create their own laws for matters not addressed in the Constitution.

In September 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, completely upending the energy grid of the small island. The nearly year-long power outage that followed vividly shows how the new climate reality intersects with race and access to energy. The island is home to brown and black US citizens who lack the political power of those living in the continental US. As the world continues to warm and storms like Maria become more commonplace, it is critical that we rethink our current energy system to enable reliable, locally produced, and locally controlled energy without replicating the current structures of power and control. In Revolutionary Power, Shalanda Baker arms those made most vulnerable by our current energy system with the tools they need to remake the system in the service of their humanity. She argues that people of color, poor people, and indigenous people must engage in the creation of the new energy system in order to upend the unequal power dynamics of the current system.Climate change will force us to rethink the way we generate and distribute energy and regulate the system. But how much are we willing to change the system? This unique moment in history provides an unprecedented opening for a deeper transformation of the energy system, and thus, an opportunity to transform society. Revolutionary Power shows us how.

Across That Bridge is the winner of the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work/Biography.In turbulent times Americans look to the civil rights movement as the apotheosis of political expression. As we confront questions of social inequality, there's no better time to revisit the lessons of the '60s and no better leader to learn from than Congressman John Lewis. In Across That Bridge, Congressman Lewis draws from his experience as a leader of the civil rights movement to offer timeless guidance to anyone seeking to live virtuously and transform the world. His wisdom, poignant recollections, and powerful ideas will inspire a new generation to usher in a freer, more peaceful society. The civil rights movement gave rise to the protest culture we know today, and the experiences of leaders like Congressman Lewis have never been more relevant. Now featuring an updated introduction from the author addressing the current administration, Across That Bridge offers a strong and moral voice to guide our nation through an era of great uncertainty."The most important lesson I have learned in the 50 years I have spent working toward the building of a better world is that the true work of social transformation starts within. It begins inside your own heart and mind, because the battleground of human transformation is really, more than any other thing, the struggle within the human consciousness to believe and accept what is true. Thus to truly revolutionize our society, we must first revolutionize ourselves. We must be the change we seek if we are to effectively demand transformation from others." (John Lewis in Across That Bridge)

In the follow-up to his very successful Black Lies, White Lies, controversial talk-show host and radio commentator Tony Brown presents a practical plan to reclaim our resources and institutions from a selfish and exclusive power elite. At the start of the twentieth century, argues Tony Brown, the world's economy was hijacked. In capitalist and communist countries alike, elitist groups took control of international trade and national banks, with dire results for the ordinary citizen. Ever since, capital has moved toward a single inner circle -- the Ruling Class Conspiracy -- who monopolize the world's markets and even its governments for personal profit. Their stratagems range from the "war" against drugs to deliberately induced racial conflict among ethnic groups in America -- none in earnest, all carefully designed to preserve a pernicious status quo.But Tony Brown has a remedy. His provocative and empowering seven-step plan offers an opportunity to break free once and for all from the constricting control of the wealthy and powerful who have run the world for far too long -- including a point-by-point program for radical reform of the income tax and a proposal to muzzle the Federal Reserve Bank, which exerts unconscionable influence over the lives of every American.Incendiary and persuasive, this book reaches beyond race to claim the high ground of historical, logical, and moral analysis. For nearly half a century of Cold War, America and the Free World were defined by opposition to Communism...but was this merely a red herring to ensure the domination of the haves over the have-nots? Read Empower the People, form your own conclusions...and hit the brakes!

A surprise general election is approaching, but how surprising is its result going to be? Opinion polls and predictions speak clearly but, given the pollsters' recent performances, how much can we still rely on them? Will people vote with their heads or their hearts - or both?
With Article 50 triggered and the stage set for Britain's departure from the EU, will voters treat the election as a second Brexit referendum, or as a vote of confidence in Theresa May's leadership?
Which Leave seats could the Conservatives gain and which Remain ones could they lose? Will Wales turn Tory for the first time since the 1850s, and will the Lib Dems return to their 2010 glory days?
These questions will remain open until the early hours of Friday 9 June. In the meantime, political expert Iain Dale summons statistics, recent polling and, of course, his sharp instincts to give us his prediction for each and every one of the UK's 650 constituencies, seat by seat.
