Caesar Augustus, originally known as Gaius Octavius, was the first Roman Emperor and one of the most transformative figures in world history. Born into an affluent plebeian family, he belonged to an ancient and influential equestrian branch of the gens Octavia. His path to power began under extraordinary circumstances. Following the assassination of his maternal great-uncle, Julius Caesar, in 44 BC, Octavius was named in Caesar's will as his adopted son and successor. This inheritance not only granted him the prestigious name of Caesar but also gave him control over Caesar’s vast estate and the loyalty of his legions. These legions played a pivotal role in his rise to power, securing his place as one of the most powerful individuals in Roman history.
In the aftermath of Caesar's assassination, the Roman Republic was plunged into chaos, and Octavius, together with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, formed the Second Triumvirate to avenge Caesar's death and secure their political dominance. This alliance, however, was marred by internal strife and competing ambitions. After their victory over Caesar’s assassins at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, the Triumvirs divided the Republic’s territories among themselves. Yet, the unity that had characterized their alliance quickly began to erode, as their personal and political ambitions led to inevitable conflict. Lepidus was soon sidelined, and in 36 BC, Antony’s support began to wane, leading to the climactic Battle of Actium in 31 BC. The defeat of Antony, coupled with the subsequent suicide of both Antony and his ally Cleopatra, left Octavian as the undisputed ruler of Rome.

Peter Bland's life has always been about overcoming challenges and taking that extra step, but sometimes it's a step too far. Like the time he stepped from his tent during and unsupported crossing of the Antarctic peninsula and was swept away by an avalanche ending up unconscious and near death 40 metres down a crevasse. Or the time he dived under a stricken yacht adrift among icebergs in the Southern Ocean on a voyage to the South Magnetic Pole - without a wetsuit and with the external air temperature minus 60 degrees Celsius - in order to free a rope that was wrapped around the propeller. Or how a year after major heart surgery to repair a massive aneurysm he dragged a sled 650 kilometres across the Arctic to become the first Australian to have reached both magnetic poles.

A Step Too Far is Peter's story. It is a tale of gripping adventure and survival in some of the planet's most inhospitable regions, as well as a profound insight into what drives a person to take such risks in the search for new adrenalin highs, and the strains and stresses it places on those who love them. A Step Too Far is an exciting and utterly absorbing study of a great Australian adventurer.

In 1952, Colorado businessman and amateur hypnotist Morey Bernstein put housewife Virginia Tighe of Pueblo, Colorado, in a trance using a technique called hypnotic regression. It had sparked off startling revelations about Tighe's alleged past life as a 19th-century Irishwoman, Bridey Murphy, and her rebirth in the United States 59 years later.
Bernstein wrote a book in 1956, The Search for Bridey Murphy, which became a New York Times best-seller, eventually being published in 30 languages in 34 countries, and was later made into a movie. In this recording you will hear one of the actual hypnotism sessions.
