Sinopsis

In "Peter Whiffle: His Life and Works," Carl Van Vechten crafts a compelling fictional autobiography that explores the life of a fictitious New York artist, delving deep into the dynamics of creativity, identity, and the often tumultuous nature of artistic ambition. The book is characterized by Van Vechten's exuberant prose, witty observations, and a rich tapestry of cultural references that vividly capture the avant-garde spirit of the 1920s jazz age. As a highly intertextual work, it engages with the broader literary context of modernism while providing sharp commentaries on social mores and the art scene of the time, making it a significant contribution to the discourse on American literature and its evolution. Carl Van Vechten, a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance and a noted critic, journalist, and photographer, is instrumental in the formation of the modern American literary landscape. His interactions with influential artists and his own experiences as a society personality colored his portrayal of Peter Whiffle, mirroring his own challenges and aspirations. His awareness of racial and cultural issues of his time, coupled with an appreciation for the performative aspects of identity, imbues the narrative with a nuanced perspective. This book is highly recommended for readers interested in the complexities of artistic life, the cultural movements of the early 20th century, and the intersections of race, identity, and modernism. Van Vechten's exploration not only provides insight into the psyche of an artist but also serves as a mirror reflecting societal attitudes, making it an essential read for anyone seeking to understand the period's literary terrain.

The lives of Wilbur and Orville Wright are quintessential American stories. Growing up in America’s heartland, the boys lived very ordinary lives with 5 other siblings and worked in printing jobs and repair jobs that involved tinkering with tools and bicycles. But at the end of the 20th century, one of the brothers’ passions became an obsession, especially for Wilbur. In December 1903, the brothers had done enough scientific work with concepts like lift to help their aeronautical designs, and they had the technical know-how to work with engines. On December 17, the brothers took turns making history’s first successful powered flights.
In 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first to make a nonstop Transatlantic solo flight, forever earning him fame and the moniker "Lucky Lindy". Two years later, Earhart was the first woman to cross the Atlantic in a plane, and her uncanny resemblance to Lindbergh earned her the nickname "Lady Lindy". Together they became America's most famous aviators, and their stories were inextricably interwoven by their lives, careers, and ill-fated destinies.
By the mid-1930s, Amelia Earhart had set a multitude of altitude and distance records, but she wanted to attempt a circumnavigation of the world. After an ill-fated first attempt, Earhart and Fred Noonan set off on another attempt, creating one of the 20th century’s most enduring mysteries. Earhart and Noonan were to land on Howland Island, 1700 miles southwest of Hawaii, but radio transmissions ceased between the plane and authorities on the ground the morning of July 2, 1937. Earhart and Noonan had disappeared, never to be seen again, despite one of the nation’s largest and costliest manhunts to date. Unfortunately, the speculation over exactly what happened to Earhart and the mystery of her disappearance have come to overshadow and obscure her many accomplishments.

This biography of America’s first African American naval aviator is a “compelling portrait of a quiet hero [and] the racial climate between 1926 and 1959” (Booklist). “In the late 1940s, when every aspiring black pilot had heard of the army’s Tuskegee program, Jesse Leroy Brown set his sights on becoming a navy aviator. An outstanding student and top athlete, the 17-year-old’s ambition was met with a combination of incredulity and resistance. Yet, at a time when Jim Crow laws were rampant, Brown managed to break the color barrier to become the first black U.S. Navy pilot. Taylor puts his considerable narrative skills to good use in tracing Brown’s path from his youth in poverty-stricken Palmer’s Crossing, Miss., to his eventual induction into the heady and dangerous world of carrier aviation. Taylor based much of his research on interviews with those who knew Brown and on personal letters from more than a half-century ago [and] doesn't skimp on the indignities Brown suffered. . . . An engaging and intimate glimpse of a young pioneer who desperately wanted to earn his aviator’s wings.” —Publishers Weekly “More than a biography, this is a thrilling story of naval aviation and combat.” —School Library Journal

"The essays contained in this volume treat of various subjects. With the exception of perhaps one we must consider all these papers as fragments. Written during the early Seventies, and intended mostly as prefaces, they are extremely interesting, since traces of Nietzsche's later tenets—like Slave and Master morality, the Superman—can be found everywhere. But they are also very valuable on account of the young philosopher's daring and able handling of difficult and abstruse subjects. "Truth and Falsity," and "The Greek Woman" are probably the two essays which will prove most attractive to the average reader."
