In 2025, Nine Arches Press launched their nationwide Primers scheme in search of exciting new voices in poetry, with Laurie Bolger as selecting editor. After reading through hundreds of anonymous entries, and narrowing down the choices from longlist to shortlist, three poets emerged as clear choices: Carl Alexandersson, Rachel Jeffcoat, and Olivia Tuck.
Primers Volume Eight now showcases their exceptional and groundbreaking new work in poetry. Each poet moves between territories of the self and the worlds we inhabit – from reflections of queer joy in landscape and nature, to the voices of ancestors, of women with 'long memories and short tempers', to a neurodivergent perspective of the precious planet we call our home in a time of environmental crisis. Steadily focused, haunting and distinctive, this is an essential collection of new work from three of poetry's most talented emerging voices.

When the British Government turn down a revolutionary weapons system in favour of the new Euro fighter they don't realise the wrath their decision will cause. The only radar system capable of detecting the new Thor's Hammer is the experimental Spyglass system being transported on a cruise liner commanded by ex-Navy Captain Eric Swanson. Martin Westfarland, designer of Thor's Hammer, decides to teach the British Government a lesson by sinking the liner and destroying Spyglass before passing Thor's Hammer onto the Iraqis who plan to use it to deliver a deadly bio-weapon to the west. Through a series of action-filled events, Swanson and Squadron Leader Gerry Denton are brought together to thwart the terrorist attack, while the SAS are assigned to locate and destroy the chemical lab in the Syrian Desert, which created the virus. Unfortunately the virus has already been loaded onto Thor's Hammer. Thus it falls to Denton to fly the Typhoon Euro fighter against the faster and stealthier Thor's Hammer before it can deliver its deadly payload.

DEED, the follow-up to torrin a. greathouse's 2022 Kate Tufts Discovery Award winning debut, Wound from the Mouth of a Wound, is a formally and lyrically innovative exploration of queer sex and desire, and what it can cost. Sprawling across art, eros, survival, myth, etymology, and musical touchstones from Bruce Springsteen to Against Me!, this new book both subverts and pays homage to the poetic canon, examining an artistic lineage that doesn't always love trans or disabled people back. Written in a broad range of received and invented forms—from caudate sonnets and the sestina, to acrostics and the burning haibun—DEED indicts violent systems of carceral, medical, and legal power which disrupt queer and disabled love and solidarity, as well as the potentially vicarious manner in which audiences consume art. This collection is a poetic triptych centered on the question of how, in spite of all these complications, to write an honest poem about desire. The Fever Syndrome

Professor Richard Myers, now in his 70s and suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease, is about to receive a lifetime achievement award for his work in the development of in-vitro fertilization. That calls for a family reunion, and given this high-functioning, dysfunctional family, there’s bound to be trouble ahead. As they gather, old resentments erupt as they fight over Richard’s legacy while facing another family member’s serious illness.

The poems of this book were written at very various times, one (“Wind over the Sea”) I believe even as early as 1910, but the order in which they are here given is not chronological beyond the fact that the third part contains only poems written after the outbreak of the war. Of these some were written in England (at Oxford in particular), some in Wales and very many during a year in France from November 1915 to December 1916, which was broken by one leave in the middle of May. “The Burial of Sophocles,” which is here placed at the end, was begun before the war and continued at odd times and in various circumstances afterwards; the final version was sent me from the trenches. Beyond these few facts no prelude and no envoi is needed other than those here printed as their author left them. J. R. R. T.
