Sinopsis

In "The True Life Stories of the Most Notorious Pirates" (Vol. 1 & 2), Captain Charles Johnson intricately chronicles the swashbuckling adventures and audacious exploits of some of history's most infamous pirates. Richly detailed and engagingly written, Johnson's prose combines elements of narrative history with sensational storytelling, placing him within the literary context of early 18th-century maritime literature, a genre burgeoning in the wake of the golden age of piracy. His vivid characterizations and gripping accounts, including those of Blackbeard and Captain Kidd, not only illuminate the romanticized life of pirates but also reflect the contemporary societal fears and fascinations surrounding lawlessness on the high seas during a tumultuous period of colonial expansion and rebellion against authority. Captain Charles Johnson, a pen name whose true identity remains a subject of scholarly debate, emerged within the milieu of 18th-century England—a time when piracy captured public imagination. Likely a critic of the British Empire, Johnson used his writing as a framework to explore themes of moral ambiguity and individual freedom, inspired by the era's shifting notions of justice and authority amid burgeoning capitalism and maritime exploration. This meticulously researched and engrossing work is highly recommended for readers intrigued by the lore of the sea, maritime history, or the human condition in the face of lawlessness. Johnson's blend of fact and narrative turns history into a compelling tale, inviting both casual readers and scholars alike to delve into the always-tempting world of piracy.

The co-host of the popular NPR podcast Planet Money provides a well-researched, entertaining, somewhat irreverent look at how money is a made-up thing that has evolved over time to suit humanity's changing needs.Money only works because we all agree to believe in it. In Money, Jacob Goldstein shows how money is a useful fiction that has shaped societies for thousands of years, from the rise of coins in ancient Greece to the first stock market in Amsterdam to the emergence of shadow banking in the 21st century. At the heart of the story are the fringe thinkers and world leaders who reimagined money. Kublai Khan, the Mongol emperor, created paper money backed by nothing, centuries before it appeared in the west. John Law, a professional gambler and convicted murderer, brought modern money to France (and destroyed the country's economy). The cypherpunks, a group of radical libertarian computer programmers, paved the way for bitcoin. One thing they all realized: what counts as money (and what doesn't) is the result of choices we make, and those choices have a profound effect on who gets more stuff and who gets less, who gets to take risks when times are good, and who gets screwed when things go bad.Lively, accessible, and full of interesting details (like the 43-pound copper coins that 17th-century Swedes carried strapped to their backs), Money is the story of the choices that gave us money as we know it today.

The origins of Ancient Egypt trace back to a time when the Nile River served as the lifeline for scattered communities that gradually developed into one of the world’s first great civilizations. The unification of Upper and Lower Egypt around 3100 BCE marked a turning point, traditionally credited to King Narmer (also known as Menes). This consolidation of power not only brought political unity but also forged a shared identity among the people along the Nile, creating the foundation for the dynastic rule that would follow for centuries.
Geography played a central role in shaping early Egyptian civilization. The Nile River, flowing from south to north, provided a reliable source of water and fertile soil through its annual inundation. These floods deposited nutrient-rich silt on the riverbanks, enabling agriculture to flourish in an otherwise arid environment. Settlements grew along the river, connected by the waterway, which also served as a route for trade and communication. Natural barriers such as deserts and the Mediterranean Sea offered protection from external invasions, allowing Egyptian culture to evolve with limited outside interference in its formative years.
The Early Dynastic Period (c. 3100–2686 BCE) saw the establishment of the first centralized state under pharaonic rule. Kings were not merely political leaders but were also regarded as divine beings, intermediaries between the gods and the people. This belief in divine kingship helped maintain stability and order in a society where religion permeated all aspects of life. Temples, tombs, and other ceremonial structures began to emerge during this era, laying the groundwork for the grand architectural achievements of later periods.

From 1845 to 1865 the Gulf of Mexico was at the center of American expansion and southern imperialism. A Continuous State of War tells the story of several communities as well as countries such as Mexico and Cuba, to uncover the way that wars within the upper rim of the Gulf of Mexico facilitated American and southern attempts to conquer Latin American nations. In the push for westward expansion that preceded the Civil War, white southerners along with other Americans engaged in violent conquest in Latin America and the American West. Through the wars that are chronicled here, white southern concepts of race became more rigidly fixed.

Maria Angela Diaz covers several conflicts leading up to the Civil War with Mexicans, Cubans, and Native Americans. She places the Civil War within this framework and follows the trajectory of relations with Latin America through the end of the Civil War and ex-Confederates' attempts to emigrate abroad. Gulf Coast communities facilitated both the physical efforts to seize territory and the construction of the highly racialized imperialist ideas that reimagined Latin America as a region that could secure the South's future. Yet the pursuit of that territory created a fluctuating and uncertain situation that shaped the choices of the diverse peoples who lived along the upper rim of the Gulf of Mexico in ways they did not expect.

Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great, ascended to the throne of Egypt at the age of around twenty-five, marking the beginning of one of the most illustrious reigns in ancient Egyptian history. Born to Seti I and Queen Tuya, Ramses was the second son in a royal family with a rich history of military conquest and religious devotion. His early life was marked by a deep connection to his father, who was a powerful Pharaoh and who taught him the ways of leadership, military strategy, and governance.
Ramses II’s rise to power was in part due to the untimely death of his older brother, Amunherkhepeshef. His subsequent coronation followed the traditional Egyptian custom, but Ramses’s reign would quickly set him apart from his predecessors. Under Seti I’s rule, Egypt had already gained considerable strength, and Ramses inherited an empire that was well-positioned for further military expansion. Yet, it was his own brilliance, both as a military leader and as a strategist, that allowed him to solidify his place as one of the greatest Pharaohs of Egypt.
One of the first significant moments of his reign was his involvement in the Battle of Kadesh. Although young at the time, Ramses’s leadership during this critical battle would define his reputation as a warrior king. Despite facing a large Hittite force, Ramses II's audacity and resilience ensured Egypt's power remained strong. Though the battle ended in a stalemate, Ramses managed to secure his status through subsequent peace negotiations, leaving a lasting legacy on Egypt’s military and political landscape.
