Sinopse

In "Locked Out: Elder Neglect and the Keys to Change," Candace Esham takes readers on a heart-wrenching journey through the hidden world of elder neglect in America's long-term care facilities. When her beloved grandmother dies from preventable neglect in an assisted living facility, Esham transforms her grief into a powerful force for change.

This eye-opening book exposes the systemic failures that leave our most vulnerable citizens at risk, detailing shocking incidents of neglect before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Esham's meticulous investigation into her grandmother's case reveals a broken system of oversight and accountability, where profits often trump patient care.

But "Locked Out" is more than an exposé—it's a roadmap for change. Esham shares her hard-won insights on building effective advocacy teams and navigating the complex world of policy-making. Her successful campaign to pass groundbreaking legislation in Delaware offers hope and practical strategies for readers seeking to make a difference.

This book is essential reading for seniors, their families, policy makers, and anyone concerned about the quality of elder care in America. Esham's powerful narrative and actionable advice will inspire and equip readers to become voices for the voiceless, ensuring that no more elders are "locked out" of the dignity and care they deserve.

Much has been written about Western intervention during the breakup of Yugoslavia, and whether it made matters worse, prevented worse atrocities, or was simply ineffective. In early 1992, however, what was clear was that Europe was hopelessly divided over the best course of action to take towards Yugoslavia, and after several years of fighting, the Bosnian War was one of the most violent conflagrations in Europe since the end of World War II.
That war had been the byproduct of centuries of tensions in the Balkans, and an attempt in the wake of World War I to redraw the political boundaries of Europe and the Middle East. That included forming the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, initially known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, a particularly fragile enterprise, and there was almost constant tension between the majority Serbs and the other Yugoslav nationalities, especially the Croats.
Depending on the source, many authors have focused on different catalysts for Yugoslavia’s demise, but Vesna Drapac may have succinctly summed the situation up when he wrote that by the end, the state “lacked a reason to exist.” There is certainly something in this sentiment, but the disintegration came at an enormous cost.
Given what happened in Yugoslavia, it should be little surprise that Bosnia did not have its fully-established borders until the 19th century, and even in modern times, in many respects the people distinguished and defined Bosnia as a polity more than its shifting borders, and regardless of whether Bosnia operated as an independent state or kingdom. It was during the Middle Ages that Bosnia’s culture and ethnic makeup truly began to coalesce, despite the politically rocky nature of the era in the Balkans.

During the Space Race, many people envisioned a future in which space travel would be a common undertaking for ordinary citizens. Just as riding in an airplane was once a daring endeavor, travel by rocket could be refined and made safer over time. That collective aspiration to someday take part in dreams NASA brought to life was integral to inspiring public interest in the space program. However, in the years following Apollo 11 in 1969, popular enthusiasm for space travel waned, and dreams of vacationing like the Jetsons gave way to more grounded goals. The level of interest NASA enjoyed would never again be comparable to the culturally defining moments of the agency’s most celebrated missions during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Programs.
Nonetheless, in 1972 and 1973, NASA sent nine astronauts to spend extended periods of time living in a craft named Skylab, the very first experimental American space station. Though Skylab would not last long, and the International Space Station remains far more famous, Skylab’s history is one of ingenuity and challenge, as well as how NASA found itself without a mission after the triumph of the Apollo Program.
