Sinopse

"The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer."

In a world obsessed with productivity and complex rituals, Brother Lawrence offers a liberating alternative. The Practice of the Presence of God reveals how a former soldier and footman—who described himself as a "clumsy blockhead"—transformed the menial labor of a monastery kitchen into a profound spiritual sanctuary. His "method" requires no special posture, no silent retreat, and no advanced degree; it simply requires an ongoing, conversational intimacy with the divine during every waking moment. Whether you are washing dishes, answering emails, or navigating a busy commute, Lawrence's wisdom shows that the "sacred" is not a place you go, but a perspective you carry.

Brother Lawrence famously claimed that he possessed God as peacefully in the "clatter of his kitchen" as if he were on his knees before the Blessed Sacrament. He teaches that by performing every small act out of love, we eliminate the divide between our "spiritual lives" and our "real lives."

Long before the modern mindfulness movement, Lawrence perfected the art of staying in the present. His focus on "pure love" and the "habitual silent conversation" serves as a powerful antidote to modern anxiety and the feeling of being constantly overwhelmed by "needless thoughts."

This book has remained in print for over 300 years because it is arguably the most accessible spiritual guide ever written. It is a favorite of world leaders, quiet seekers, and people of all faiths who desire a life of interior depth without withdrawing from the world. It is the ultimate proof that the smallest life can be the most significant.

Under the shadow of gray clouds, three children venture into the woods, where they spot the corpse of an old man on a scaffold. Suddenly a wild figure emerges, with long fingernails and tangled hair. It is the Hattak fullih nipi foni, the bone picker, who comes to tear off rotting flesh with his fingernails. Only the Choctaws who adhere to the old ways will speak of him. The frightening bone picker is just one of many entities, scary and mysterious, who lurk behind every page of this spine-tingling collection of Native fiction, written by award-winning Choctaw author Devon A. Mihesuah.

As a Choctaw citizen, with deep ties to Indian Territory and Oklahoma, Mihesuah grew up hearing the stories of her ancestors. In the tradition of Native storytelling, she spins tales that move back and forth fluidly across time. The ancient beings, we discover, followed the tribe from their original homelands in Mississippi and are now ever-present influences on tribal consciousness.

While some of the horrors told here are "real life" in nature, the art of fiction that Mihesuah employs reveals surprising outcomes or alternative histories. It turns out the things that scare us the most can lead to the answers we are seeking and even ensure our very survival.

Discover the Secret to Constant Peace in a Busy World.

In the seventeenth century, a humble monastery cook named Brother Lawrence discovered a profound truth: that God is as present in the clatter of kitchen pots and pans as He is in the quiet of the sanctuary. The Practice of the Presence of God is a collection of his letters and recorded conversations, revealing his simple yet life-changing method of maintaining a constant, loving conversation with the Divine.

Brother Lawrence's approach is not about complex rituals or long hours of solitude, but about a "habitual, silent, and secret conversation of the soul with God." This enduring spiritual classic offers a path to profound interior peace and joy, proving that a deep spiritual life is accessible to anyone, regardless of their circumstances or occupation. Whether you are seeking to deepen your prayer life or find meaning in the mundane, these timeless words offer a practical and beautiful guide to living every moment in the light of God's love.

A Society - From their pens to...

    Virginia Woolf

Adeline Virginia Woolf was born on the 25th January 1882 in South Kensington in London.
Although lauded as a founder of modernist writing with such classics as ‘Orlando’, ‘Mrs Dalloway’ and ‘To the Lighthouse’ and, of course, many classic short stories, her background is filled with elements of tragedy that she somehow overcame to become such a revered writer. Her mother died when she was 13, her half-sister Stella two years later and with it her first of several nervous breakdowns. Appallingly it was later found that three of her half-brothers had sexually abused her so darkness must have seemed ever present.
She began writing professionally at age 20 but her father’s death two years later brought a complete mental collapse and she was briefly institutionalised. Somehow she found within herself a literary career and with it great innovations in writing; she was a pioneer of “stream of consciousness”.
Her tight circle of friends were the founders of the Bloomsbury Group, a movement whose legacy still influences across the arts and society in many way to this day.
Whilst the dark periods continued to interrupt her emotional state her rate of work never ceased. Until, on 28th March 1941, Woolf put on her overcoat, filled up its pockets with stones, and walked into the River Ouse, in Lewes, East Sussex and drowned herself. Her body was not recovered until the 18th April. She was 59.
She left behind a note which read in part “Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do”.
