Sinopsis

Sky Pollution examines how atmospheric pollutants from sources like industrial emissions and vehicle exhaust alter our skies, impacting their color, visibility, and air quality. It highlights how reduced visibility affects transportation and how air pollution contributes to respiratory illnesses, emphasizing the need for environmental stewardship.

The book uniquely combines atmospheric science, chemistry, and geography to explain the generation, dispersion, and interaction of pollutants, revealing the tangible threat to both environmental and human well-being.

The book progresses from basic atmospheric optics and pollutant chemistry to detailed case studies of pollution sources and their geographical distribution. Using data-driven assessments, satellite imagery analysis, and air quality indices, it showcases the transboundary nature of atmospheric pollutants.

By linking sky pollution to urban planning and public policy, Sky Pollution underscores the necessity for integrated solutions, making complex scientific information accessible to a broad audience concerned about environmental and earth sciences.

Space exploration was always an expensive business, and throughout NASA’s history, the agency has had to justify to Congress its need for every dollar it intended to spend. This problem has helped NASA to be more careful and more creative with the money they did receive, and scientists had to justify the equipment they wanted to include on each space probe. They had to justify the size and the power demand, too. If they wanted too much, the entire mission might be scrubbed, and all their work would have been for naught. This made planning and designs leaner and more efficient, as scientists and engineers were more careful with their recommendations.
In fact, the Pioneer program was the most diversified sequence of any of NASA’s programs, and though they’re now remembered for being among the first probes in history to reach the Outer Solar System, the elaborate planning changed goals several times over several years before resulting in historic successes. NASA had wanted to do a Grand Tour of the Solar System toward the end of the 1970s to take advantage of the scheduled alignment of planets, which meant the Pioneer missions were meant to be test runs prior to the main events (Voyager 1 and Voyager 2), and a great many things discovered by Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 were essential to the successful planning of the Voyager probes.
Voyager 1 and 2 have done far more than accomplish their original missions. In fact, they are now exploring interstellar space, far beyond the outer planets in the cold wasteland between the stars. Each spacecraft carries a copy of a golden record which contains an introduction to Earth, should some alien civilization happen to encounter either Voyager 1 or Voyager 2. In the first Star Trek movie, writers imagined just that, creating a story of a Voyager spacecraft being captured and adapted for its own uses.

Endocrinology is the branch of medicine and biology that deals with the study of the endocrine system, which includes glands and organs that secrete hormones into the bloodstream. These hormones are chemical messengers that help regulate various bodily functions, including metabolism, growth, reproduction, and mood. The endocrine system works in concert with the nervous system to maintain homeostasis, the body’s internal balance, and respond to external stimuli.
At the core of the endocrine system are the endocrine glands, which include the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries, and testes. Each of these glands produces specific hormones that target various organs and tissues throughout the body. The hypothalamus, located in the brain, acts as the command center for the endocrine system. It sends signals to the pituitary gland, which in turn regulates other glands. The thyroid gland, for example, produces thyroid hormones that control metabolism, while the adrenal glands release corticosteroids and catecholamines in response to stress.
One of the defining characteristics of the endocrine system is its regulation through feedback mechanisms, primarily negative feedback loops. In these loops, the secretion of a hormone is reduced or increased based on the levels of that hormone in the blood. For example, when blood glucose levels rise, the pancreas secretes insulin to lower them. Once glucose levels return to normal, insulin secretion decreases. These feedback systems help the body adapt to changing conditions and maintain a stable internal environment.

Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis provides accessible, comprehensive, and up-to-date information about the challenges patients, family members, and caregivers face when confronted by ALS, a disease that affects approximately 5,600 Americans every year, with as many as 30,000 people managing the disease at any given time. ALS is a difficult disease for the patient and is also challenging for the caregiver and family as there are many questions, issues relating to care, and problems to manage. This guide covers all aspects of managing ALS, from the onset of symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and coping strategies to the use of home health care or hospice, and new research in the field. The book also sheds lights on difficult topics, such as end-of-life care and managing legal affairs.

Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is unique because it covers two perspectives: one author is a neurologist with thirty years of experience treating ALS patients, and the other author experienced first-hand the issues in providing care for a parent with ALS. Formatted in a question-and-answer style, peppered throughout with patient stories, and with sections devoted to family members and caregivers, this compassionate resource provides guidance to those seeking to understand how to live with this disease.
