Summary

Fly Creek Cider Mill and Orchard is one of New York State's oldest working cider mills. Owned by authors Brenda and Bill Michaels, the mill sits on the banks of Fly Creek near historic Cooperstown, where for more than 150 years visitors have come to watch as apples are pressed into fresh cider.Released to commemorate the 160th anniversary of the mill, The Fly Creek Cider Mill Cookbook captures the history of this treasured operation through stories, photography, and more than 100 apple- and cider-based recipes. These recipes range from sauces and drinks to breads and soups to starters and main courses. Each recipe has been selected with the home cook in mind. Contributed by mill employees and friends, each dish has been vetted by James Beard Award–winning cookbook author Judith Choate, who is a friend of the Michaels family. When Hosea Williams opened the mill in the mid-1800s, settlers from around the region abandoned making labor-intensive, homemade cider in favor of milling their apples at Fly Creek. While waiting for the fruit to be turned into cider, community members amused themselves by watching the newfangled machinery, picnicking, and gossiping with friends and family—a scene not so different from the mill's workings today.More than 175,000 people visit the mill each year to experience a time-honored tradition that expresses the essence of another era. This book will appeal not only to home cooks in search of some nostalgic goodness but also to those who are interested in the history of a resilient American enterprise and the farm-to-table food movement.

With a bounty of regional Italian dishes, the authors of La Tavola Italiana serve up “inspiration for the mind as well as for the kitchen” (Booklist).   Italian cooking draws its inspiration from the roll call of seasonal ingredients that pass through its kitchens, and in this splendid volume Diane Darrow and Tom Maresca share the simple secrets of making the most of the best fresh, top-of-the-season foods from farm and woodland, lake and sea.  The Seasons of the Italian Kitchen presents two hundred recipes according to the four seasons and the traditional courses of the Italian meal: antipasto, primo, secondo, contorno, dolce. All are wed (as they always are in Italy) to the wines that best match them, and the recipes have been tested and adapted to seasonal ingredients readily available in the United States. Richly stocked with delightful anecdotes and culinary lore gathered from the authors’ long love affair with Italy, they invite both amateur and expert to experience the Italian genius for making the most of the moment.   “If you can read or even browse through this book without running straight to the kitchen, you’ve got more willpower than we do.” —The Wine Investors   “Italian cookbooks abound, and some of these dishes will be familiar, but the authors’ text is well written and informed, and there are some unusual regional specialties here, too.” —Library Journal

The history of the world-famous confectioner—maker of the Cadbury Creme Egg—from nineteenth-century shop to multinational brand.   When John Cadbury came to Birmingham in 1824, he sold tea, coffee, and drinking chocolate in a small shop on Bull Street. Drinking chocolate was considered a healthy alternative to alcohol, something Cadbury, a Quaker, was keen to encourage. By 1879, the Cadburys were ready to make their historic move to Bournville, where they established their famous “factory in a garden,” built on the sprawling Bournbrook estate.  A History of Cadbury recounts the history of this beloved British chocolatier and looks at the social impact the company has had, both on the chocolate and cocoa business and on British culture at large. This is the story of how Cadbury began, how it grew, and how it diversified in order to bring its chocolates and candies to one generation after the next.
