Sinopse

In "Inquiries and Opinions," Brander Matthews intricately weaves a tapestry of literary criticism and cultural commentary that reflects the shifting tides of American literature in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Matthews, known for his articulate and engaging prose, offers readers a series of essays that probe into the aesthetic, moral, and social dimensions of literature. Through incisive analysis, he addresses the prevailing literary movements of his time, emphasizing the significance of realism and the emerging modernist trends, while advocating for the American voice in a predominantly European literary landscape. Brander Matthews is often regarded as a pivotal figure in the development of American literary criticism. A professor at Columbia University and a prolific writer, Matthews's insights stem from his deep appreciation of literature as both an art form and a cultural artifact. His extensive travels in Europe and engagements with contemporary writers enriched his perspective, enabling him to construct a nuanced framework for discussing literature that resonates well beyond his own era. Readers seeking a profound understanding of American literary evolution will find "Inquiries and Opinions" an essential addition to their intellectual journey. Matthews's articulate reflections and critical inquiries not only illuminate the complexities of literature but also invite readers to consider their own interpretations of the written word, making this work indispensable for scholars and casual readers alike.

Communication is not always through sound or language. Much can be said with gestures and movement of eyes. In fact, more often than not, it is the body language that 'says' more than words. Now discover all the finer points and the nuances of body language in this masterly work. How does a thumb gesture display dominance, superiority and aggression? How does dilation of eyes send a romantic signal? What does a sideways glance indicate? Given these incredible insights, the book can prove to be of immense use for professionals like advocates, doctors, policemen, judges, salesmen, politicians, judges, executives, bureaucrats and customers etc - in short, people who are essentially in public dealing. But then, it is for all, a true guide for analysing behaviour and attitudes. #v&spublishers

A new work by the author of “In Defense of Witches” that seeks to redefine heterosexual relationships and give women back their voice. As feminist principles have taken wider hold in society, and basic ideas about equality for women can seem a given, many women still struggle in one of the most important areas of life: love. Whether it’s finding a partner, seeking a commitment from one, or struggling in a relationship that is unfulfilling or even potentially abusive, women still find that deeply-engrained notions of gender and behavior can be obstacles to a healthy, loving relationship. In her new book, acclaimed French feminist Mona Chollet tackles some of these long-held and pervasive ideas that remain stumbling blocks for many women in heterosexual relationships.Drawing from popular culture, politics, and literature, Reinventing Love provides a provocative, accessible look at how heterosexual relationships can improve and evolve under a feminist lens.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

Debates over paper money and banking are older than the United States of America itself. 18th and 19th century Americans were deeply ambivalent about paper money and central banks, and political fights over these issues were among the bitterest in American history. In fact, controversies over the country’s central bank birthed both the first (1792-1824) and second (1828-1852) party systems; frequently, policymakers crafted responses to the crisis at hand, and as a result they implemented policies that were inadequate to the challenges the country faced in the future.
Indeed, the early administrations' ambivalence toward central banking and paper money, combined with the ad hoc nature of policymakers’ responses, caused severe problems. These issues came to a head during the Panic of 1907, which provoked a major reassessment of America’s banking system. Progressive Era reformers like President Woodrow Wilson walked a tightrope, balancing fears of centralized wealth with the undeniable need for a rational mechanism to help govern the country’s economy. The system they created represented half a loaf, its many compromises and weaknesses corrected by the response to two other crises: the Great Depression and the Cold War. The Federal Reserve System that has existed since the Accord of 1951 has cooled the passionate conflict over central banking and rendered obsolete many of the monetary questions that so animated Americans in previous centuries.

Charles W. Eliot, 21st President of Harvard University, edited this volume of prefaces ... authored by a Who's Who of World Literature: Bacon, Calvin, Caxton, Condell, Copernicus, Dryden, Fielding, Goethe, Heminge, Hugo, Johnson, Knox, Newton, Raleigh, Spenser, Taine, Whitman and Wordsworth. Eliot wrote in his preface to these prefaces, "No part of a book is so intimate as the Preface. Here, after the long labor of the work is over, the author descends from his platform, and speaks with his reader as man to man, disclosing his hopes and fears, seeking sympathy for his difficulties, offering defence or defiance, according to his temper, against the criticisms which he anticipates." Since these stories are often pretty straightforward, you’ll need a simple plan for learning effectively with them. To get the most out of your short story, I suggest this three-step approach:
Read the story for the gist, not the details. Focus on trying to understand the main ideas of the story: the characters, the major plot developments and the setting.
Read it again, but this time, do a careful read. Highlight or underline unknown words, phrases or grammatical constructions that are unfamiliar to you. Once you finish this read, translate all the unfamiliar words and phrases and write them down in a notebook or on flashcards to help you remember them later.
Use the translations to read the story one final time. This allows you to understand the text fully and have quick access to the translations and explanations.
