Nunzio Calabrisi is investigating the disappearance of his great-uncle, 71 years later. He goes to the one man that was with his uncle when he went missing, while they were on leave during World War II. All that the man can give him is a ring and the skeletal remains of the finger that the ring was on at the time. Nothing makes any sense, and no concrete evidence seems possible to be found. The town where it all occurred seems to be one shrouded in great mystery and intrigue. No one can give any straightforward answers, only legends, and in the case of Marion Tucker, a firsthand account that sounds as if it is just as much legend as everything else. Is there a great evil at work in Somerset, Virginia? Is the town haunted by a centuries-old specter that seeks revenge on all who invade its home?

Edgar Allan Poe was one of the most important and influential American writers of the 19th century. The book describes a tragic story involving a young maiden of 'the rarest beauty'. She loved and wedded an eccentric painter who cared more about his work than anything else in the world, including his wife. The painter eventually asked his wife to sit for him, and she obediently consented, sitting "meekly for many weeks" in his turret chamber. The painter worked so diligently at his task that he did not recognize his wife's fading health, as she, being a loving wife, continually 'smiled on and still on, uncomplainingly'. As the painter neared the end of his work, he let no one enter the turret chamber and rarely took his eyes off the canvas, even to watch his wife. After 'many weeks had passed', he finally finished his work.

A pious monk is driven by sexual desire into the depths of sin and depravity in this eighteenth-century classic of Gothic fiction.

Ambrosio is the abbot of the Capuchin monastery in Madrid. He is beloved by his flock, and his renowned piety has earned him the nickname The Man of Holiness. Yet beneath the veneer of this religious man lies a heart of hypocrisy; arrogant, licentious, and vengeful, he follows his sexual desires down the torturous path to ruin. Along the way, he encounters a naïve virgin who falls prey to his scheming, a baleful beauty fluent in witchcraft, the ghostly Bleeding Nun, an evil prioress, the Wandering Jew, and Lucifer himself.

Matthew Lewis’s The Monk shocked and titillated readers with its graphic portrayal of lust, sin, and violence when it was first published in 1796. It was so controversial that the House of Commons—of which Lewis was a member—pronounced him licentious and perverse. A true classic of the Gothic novel, it left an indelible mark on English literature and has influenced such eminent writers as Byron, Scott, Poe, Flaubert, Hawthorne, Emily Brontë, and many others.

This edition of The Monk, set from the unexpurgated first edition, includes an introduction by John Berryman.
