Sinopse

Jake Reynolds is an art thief. Perhaps the greatest, luckiest art thief ever. He steals rare paintings and replaces them with forgeries so exact that nobody can tell the difference.

It's 1915 and WW1 rages across Europe. After finding the owner of an unknown Rembrandt killed in his own mansion, Jake cannot let it go; a quirk of his personality refuses him to allow anyone to get away with murder.

The problem? How can he find the vicious killers and bring them to justice without revealing his own felonious act.

A historical mystery set in early 20th century Europe, DEATH OF A CUCKOLD KNIGHT is the second book in B.R. Stateham's Jake Reynolds Mysteries series.

A perfect storm materializes when Patrick Bouchard, an underwater welder working in the shipyards of San Pedro, California, loses his only child, Gabriel, to cancer. Driven by grief and rage, he sets out on a quest to make those he feels responsible pay, specifically, Standard Pharmaceutical, the megacorporation owning the HMO that denied radical treatment to his stage-four terminal son. That wasn’t right, and someone had to be held accountable.
They’d pay, all right, but not in blood—that would be too easy and serve no purpose.
He’d lost his son, his heart, and his faith; he couldn’t get much lower. But from such depths, treasures are found, and in that abyss of human suffering, Patrick devises a scheme to keep his promise to Gabriel “to fight to the end.”
One way or another he’d make sure no child would be written off to satisfy the bottom line of a corporate balance sheet. The Jack of Broken Hearts was about to introduce himself to Sanford Peck and his Standard Pharmaceutical empire.

Móric Jókay de Ásva was born on the 18th February 1825 in Komárom, then in the Kingdom of Hungary but now part of Slovakia.

Due to his timid and delicate constitution he was educated at home until the age of 10 and then sent away to complete his studies at the Calvinist college at Pápa.

At 12 his father died, and he was pushed to honour him by replicating his career as a lawyer. He studied hard and completed the curriculum at Kecskemét and Pest. He won his first case as a newly graduated lawyer.

But he found a career in law to be dull and, encouraged by the positive reaction to his first play, he moved to Pest in 1845. There he published, first in a newspaper, and then as a novel ‘Hétköznapok’ (‘Working Days’). It was acclaimed as a masterpiece. To add to his promise he was appointed as the editor of Életképek, the leading Hungarian journal.

In 1848 he married the actress, Róza Laborfalvi. That same year Europe was awash with revolutions and Jókai, a moderate Liberal, enthusiastically supported the nationalist cause and its decision to depose the Habsburg dynasty. The attempt failed.

He was now classed as a political suspect and threw himself into his literary career, writing dozens of novels, many of them masterpieces, stories, essays and the like. In total he wrote several hundred volumes, many of them in the local Magyar language which helped arrest its declining relevance in society.

By 1867 the political temperature had cooled, and he entered parliament as well as becoming the editor a government journal he had founded. His skills were much admired and helped the government navigate through several difficult matters.

His wife died in 1886 but although grief-stricken he continued to work and to write.

In 1897 the king appointed him a member of the upper house. Two years later he caused a minor scandal by marrying the young 20-year-old actress, Bella Nagy. At the time he was 74.

Mór Jókai died in Budapest on the 5th May 1904. He was 79.

A miracle is for sale. But the cost is paid in blood.

For the elite clients of the Cheiron Clinic, the world-renowned fertility center is a place of hope and new beginnings. But behind the hospital's sterile, white walls, Detective Inspector Maria Wern discovers a much darker reality - one where women are suffering from inexplicable hallucinations and wounds that refuse to heal.

When a patient takes her life in a fit of absolute desperation, Maria is pulled into the clinic's orbit. There, she encounters Adina, a woman living a double life.

Trapped in a web of medical greed and domestic control, Adina begins a dangerous dance: trying to alert the police without revealing the truth that would destroy her. As Maria untangles the connection between a series of mysterious car crashes and the 'accidental' deaths at Cheiron, she realizes that in the business of creating life, some people find it far too easy to take it away.

In a world where the truth is medicated into silence, Maria Wern must decide who to trust before the next accident becomes her own.
