Summary

After twenty years as a professional soldier, Decimus Julius Virilis - distant kin to the Imperator himself - has been commissioned the third in command of the newly formed Legio XII Brundisium.

It's his last assignment before retiring from Caesar Augustus’ legions - and turns out to be much more dangerous than he anticipated. After being shipped off to Dalmatia to fight the rebels waging war against Rome, the untrained legion immediately blunders into a death trap deep in enemy territory, leaving the commanding officer and his lieutenants dead.

Decimus is commanded by the heir apparent, Tiberius Caesar, to find the mastermind who planned the diabolical trap and is attempting to plunge the Roman Empire back into a civil war. But can the Roman tribune see the unseen and solve a crime others think is impossible?

Set in the time of the Roman Empire, Death By Greek Fire is the first book in B.R. Stateham's 'Decimus Julius Virilis' series of historical mystery novels.
Available since: 12/09/2022.
Print length: 276 pages.

The Assyrian Rejuvenator, published in 1907, is one of R. Austin Freeman's novels written under the name Clifford Ashdown and the first to feature well-known protagonist Dr. Thorndyke--a medical-legal forensic investigator. Although Freeman's early works were seen as simple homages to his contemporary, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he quickly developed his own style--the 'inverted detective story'--in which the identity of the criminal is shown from the beginning, and the story then describes the detective's attempt to solve the mystery. In this tale, inflated claims about the powers of an expensive elixir put private investigator Romney Pringle in pursuit of a ruthless con man. The trickster has reason to believe that his customers won't complain, but Pingle sets out to destroy the crooked business.

In London, 1666, drinking coffee can get you killed…
The case of Samuel Pepys’s missing pocket watch escalates rapidly when Eustace Blount, writer and wit, is found murdered in Rose’s Coffee House on The Strand.
Blount was a prig, a poseur and a parliamentarian – nobody liked him, not even his friends – and Pepys’s intrepid personal inquisitors, Abby Harcourt and Jacob Standish, find themselves with a suspect list as unwieldy as it is perplexing.
When their investigation leads to the nearby Gilded Bean coffee house, frequented by fervently royalist members of parliament, it becomes clear that a dangerous political game is afoot. Abby and Jacob face their most audacious challenge yet:
To break into Westminster Palace, at the very heart of English politics. The penalty, if discovered – is death.
The Samuel Pepys Mysteries bring 17th century England to life, in the company of the celebrated diarist himself, and his personal inquisitors, Abby and Jacob. If you love a fiendish mystery wrapped in vivid history, this series is for you.
