The country of Iran had a revolution in 1979 and Jane Wood was there. Employed as a nurse at a large hospital in Iran, Jane had flown out with her husband, who was an accountant, and they became part of the expatriate community. The 'expats' had a wonderful life. They were well paid and lived in comparative luxury. Some even had servants, large houses and swimming pools. They noted that the country was divided and poverty was rife, but it was still a surprise when protests started. Jane had been there for several years when things got ugly and knew the country well. Up to that point Iran had seemed a stable country, with the Shah as its Head of State, a man who commanded the confidence of the Americans. He was seen as a Strong Leader, but his efforts to suppress the unrest came to nothing and he was forced to take his family and flee.
Meanwhile Jane had problems of her own. Her job was secure but her marriage was falling apart. She felt increasingly alone and took time off to re-visit Britain and even holiday abroad. When she returned to Iran - much against the advice of her family and friends - the situation had greatly deteriorated and religious fundamentalists had come to power. Because of their dictates, few Iranians dared to use Jane's hospital, as it was mainly staffed by 'foreigners'. The Hospital Director was imprisoned and staff felt isolated and uninformed. There was a curfew restricting movement at night, and gunshots rang out in the dark. Colleagues started to leave the hospital forever. Jane was reluctant to go, but eventually had to leave, and was brought out by the RAF on one of the last flights out of the country. It was a scary time.
Jane has recorded her thoughts, impressions and memories of those months, and has added poems and songs she wrote then, and years later, reflecting on her experiences when back in Manchester. This book is a unique collections of writings, capturing a well-known but little understood part of history.

As paramedic Kathy Harms navigates the devastation in the aftermath of the catastrophic 2005 Kashmir Earthquake as a first-time medical aid worker, she is confronted by the scale of suffering she observes in the region, and her own lack of experience in the area of humanitarian work.
In the field, she meets Nadeem Malik, a 19 year old student struggling to come to terms with personal loss and the destruction of his home and everything that was once familiar. He must now find a way to support his family, and find them suitable shelter for the cold winter months. His plight mirrors that of the 2.8 million people in the region who were displaced by the earthquake begging the question, is recovery from a disaster of this scale even possible?
“Resilience in the Rubble: A True Tale of Aid and Survival in Kashmir” weaves together the firsthand accounts of both Kathy and Nadeem. Though heartbreaking, their personal stories show the strength of the human spirit, and the resilience of a population to overcome unthinkable adversity.

In this powerful and inspiring memoir, a Pakistani immigrant shares his story of finding new freedoms and a new faith in America. It’s easy to talk about freedom. But unless someone has lived in a world that suffocates freedom, it’s difficult to appreciate the liberty found in America. This is the true story of a Pakistani Muslim who immigrates to the United States for college and discovers five transformational freedoms along the way: the freedom to fail and start over, to love, to choose one’s faith, to be an entrepreneur, and to self-govern.Contrasting these precious freedoms with the life he lived in Pakistan, Ali’s story reveals that God is the true source of liberty as He works in people’s lives to bring about redemption. A call to value and preserve American freedoms, Beyond the Golden Door is also an invitation for readers to consider ultimate freedom in Jesus Christ.

“The Seventeen Traditions brings us back to what’s important in life—and what makes America truly great.”—Jim Hightower, Illinois TimesThe activist, humanitarian, and former presidential candidate named one of the 100 most influential figures in American history by The Atlantic—one of only three living Americans so honored—Ralph Nader, looks back at his small-town Connecticut childhood and the traditions and values that shaped his progressive worldview. At once eye-opening, thought-provoking, and surprisingly fresh and moving, Nader’s The Seventeen Traditions is a celebration of uniquely American ethics certain to appeal to fans of Mitch Albom, Tim Russert, and Anna Quindlen—an unexpected and most welcome gift from this fearlessly committed reformer and outspoken critic of corruption in government and society. In a time of widespread national dissatisfaction and disillusionment that has given rise to new dissent characterized by the Occupy Wall Street movement, the liberal icon shows us how every American can learn from The Seventeen Traditions and, by embracing them, help bring about meaningful and necessary change.
