Physicians lead. It’s an integral part of what they do. They lead patients, they lead healthcare teams, they lead colleagues, departments, and organizations. But most doctors receive very little training in leadership. Leon E. Moores, MD, DSc, FACS is a neurosurgeon and seasoned healthcare leader who literally “wrote the book” on physician leadership for the U.S. Army. A West Point graduate, Moores became an officer and a surgeon in the Army and recognized how the lack of formal leadership training for doctors impacts physician effectiveness, team performance, and patient outcomes. Along with a team of highly accomplished colleagues, he created the physician leadership development program that has been widely referenced by the U.S. military. Moores now shares that leadership wisdom, and the lessons he has learned through decades of healthcare organization leadership, with physicians everywhere and with all readers passionate about improving healthcare.

    Splinters of Infinity - Cosmic...

Set in a revolutionary era of physics and science when a series of rapid-fire discoveries was upending our understanding of the universe, Splinters of Infinity by Mark Wolverton tells a little-known story: the tale of two of America's foremost physicists, Robert Millikan (1868–1953) and Arthur Compton (1892–1962), who found themselves locked in an intense, often deeply personal, conflict about cosmic rays. Confirmed in 1912, cosmic rays—enigmatic forms of penetrating radiation—seemed to raise all new questions about the origins of the universe, but they also offered the potential to explain everything—or reveal the existence of God.In engaging, accessible prose, Wolverton takes the listener through the twists and turns of the Millikan-Compton debate, one of the first major public examples of how heated the controversies among scientists could become—and the lengths that scientists would go to settle their disputes. Along the way, Wolverton probes the forever elusive question, still unanswered today, about where cosmic rays come from and what they reveal about black holes, distant galaxies, the existence of dark matter and dark energy, and the birth of the universe, concluding that these splinters of infinity may not hold the keys to the secret of creation but do bring us ever closer to it.

From an award-winning author, astronomer, and anthropologist, an exploration of the scientific and cultural significance of the mesmerizing cosmic display.Since the first humans looked up and saw the sun swallowed by darkness, our species has been captivated by solar eclipses. Astronomer and anthropologist Anthony Aveni explains the history and culture surrounding solar eclipses, from prehistoric Stonehenge to Babylonian creation myths, to a confirmation of Einstein’s theory of general relativity, to a spectacle that left New York City in the moon’s shadow, to future eclipses that will capture human imaginations. In one accessible and engaging read, Aveni explains the science behind the phenomenon, tracks eclipses across the ancient world, and examines the roles of solar eclipses in modern times to reveal the profound effects these cosmic events have had on human history. Colored by his own experiences—Aveni has witnessed eight total solar eclipses in his lifetime—his account of astronomy’s most storied phenomenon will enthrall anyone who has looked up at the sky with wonder.“Aveni’s authoritative but accessible text is the clearest statement of the way our perception of eclipses has changed over the centuries.” —Stuart Clark, New Scientist“Authoritative and engaging.” —Marcelo Gleiser, NPR’s 13.7“A recommended way to share the spirit of the occasion.” —Laurence A. Marschall, Natural History magazine“Everything you need to enjoy a solar eclipse—and even predict one, just like the Babylonians did! Aveni’s entertaining explorations show the very different impacts eclipses have had on past and present cultures.” —David DeVorkin, National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution

The Emmy Award–winning creator of GASLAND tells his intimate and damning, personal story of our world in crisis. With a foreword by Bill McKibben.
The rules have changed. The water has changed. The climate has changed. The truth has changed. We must change.
In The Truth Has Changed, Josh Fox turns the rapid-fire shocks that are remaking the very fabric of our lives—writing as a first responder, a reporter, a documentarian, and an activist—into art, literature, and at least one answer to the question of what the future holds.
    Our normal isn’t normal anymore.
The paradigm shift that global warming represents parallels a paradigm shift in how we process truth. Both deeply affect democracy.
Josh Fox has had a front row seat—a first responder after 9/11, filming the Deepwater Horizon spill close up from the air and on the ground, a member of Bernie Sanders’s delegation of the Democratic Platform Committee, risking his life to cross a bridge on Thanksgiving Day at Standing Rock, traveling the nation and the world, shooting his films, talking to people everywhere he goes.
The Truth Has Changed is his first book, the companion to his new one-man show of the same title, and it’s beautiful.
