Sinopsis

In Neurology Rounds with the Maverick, clinical neurologist Dr. Bernard M. Patten recounts his most profound, entertaining, and uncommon experiences with patients throughout his 34-year medical career.

Learn about the strange case of the teenage girl who got pulled out of class for medical treatment because she couldn't stop laughing. Then consider the 14-year-old who faked grand mal seizures for more than a year to get away from her sexually abusive father.

Consider the awkward situation of the hairdresser who heard voices from God instructing her to stab her customers with her scissors or the well-documented phenomenon of patients (including Dr. Patten's own mother) correctly predicting their own deaths.

Read Dr. Patten's encounters with artist George Rodrigue as he lost his memory and physicist Stephen Hawking when he was considering experimental ALS treatment. As well, enjoy learning about when Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich came to America to be treated for atrophy in his right hand and shipping magnate Aristotle Socrates Onassis's consultations about Myasthenia Gravis

Neurology Rounds with the Maverick presents an authentic look inside some of the most complex, strange, and fascinating neurological cases of the last half-century of medicine. Read it to appreciate the good, the bad, the terrible, and the densely human anecdotes that document the past and light the way for the future of medicine.

Elvis Presley, born in 1935, became known as the "King of Rock and Roll". He was a singer and actor whose career took off in 1954 when Sam Phillips recorded him singing "That's All Right," a blues number. Elvis’s performances were known for their suggestive movements and gyrations which created controversy. Despite this, his popularity grew rapidly. He signed with RCA Victor in 1955 and had his first number-one hit with "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956. Elvis’s music combined elements of rock and roll, pop, rockabilly, country, gospel, R&B, and blues. He was drafted into the US Army in 1958 and died at the age of 42 in 1977.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Elvis Presley's twin brother, Jesse Garon, was delivered stillborn 35 minutes before Elvis was born. Elvis became very close to his parents, especially his mother, growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi.

The Presley family attended an Assembly of God church, where Elvis found his initial musical inspiration. They often relied on neighbors and government food assistance because Vernon Presley moved from one odd job to the next.

Sam Phillips was looking for someone who could bring the sound of black musicians to a broader audience. He invited Elvis to record after being impressed with his singing, pairing him with guitarist Winfield "Scotty" Moore and upright bass player Bill Black.

During an unfruitful recording session, Elvis launched into a 1946 blues number, Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right", which Phillips began taping. This was the sound he had been looking for, which led to the start of Elvis's career.

Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast tissue that often results from an infection. It is a condition that primarily affects women, especially those who are breastfeeding, although it can also occur in non-lactating women and, in rare cases, men. The inflammation associated with mastitis is typically caused by bacteria entering the breast tissue through a cracked or sore nipple, though other factors such as blocked milk ducts, hormonal changes, or injury to the breast can also contribute. Mastitis is not only physically painful but can also cause significant emotional distress, particularly for new mothers who may already be dealing with the challenges of breastfeeding and caring for an infant.
The importance of understanding mastitis lies in its ability to impact both the physical and emotional well-being of those affected. When left untreated, mastitis can lead to complications such as breast abscesses, which may require surgical intervention. Additionally, untreated or recurrent mastitis can cause long-term issues with breastfeeding, leading to early weaning or, in some cases, chronic breast pain. Early recognition and appropriate treatment are critical for preventing these complications and ensuring the best possible outcome for the individual.
While mastitis is most commonly associated with breastfeeding, it is essential to recognize that the condition can affect women and men in other contexts as well. For non-lactating women, mastitis can sometimes be linked to hormonal changes, particularly during pregnancy or menopause. Men, though rarely affected, can also experience mastitis, often as a result of an infection or other underlying health issue. Understanding the different causes, symptoms, and risk factors of mastitis can help individuals identify the condition early and seek appropriate medical care before it progresses into something more serious.

Peru is a land of majesty and wonder where myth, legend, and history all come together. And this audiobook gives you a front-row seat!
The land of Peru is one that, for many, seems far away and distant. Even for those living relatively nearby geographically, Peru can seem just out of reach. After all, Peru is situated high in the Andes on the western coast of South America. Those who dare to live at this high of an elevation have learned to live on their own terms.
The Inca leader Manco II, for example, displayed his tenacity by heading a rebel kingdom in the depths of the Amazon even after much of the Inca Empire of his ancestors had been overrun by the Spanish conquistadors.
Manco’s struggle was later picked up by Túpac Amaru II, who waged war against the Spanish occupation. Túpac Amaru II would be captured and executed for daring to revolt against the Spanish Crown, but his legend would live on in the hearts and minds of Peruvians everywhere.
Fast forward to Peru’s independence from Spain, and one finds the heroic Simón Bolívar. He was pivotal in the independence of Peru, as well as a whole slew of Latin American countries, which he was put in charge of at various times during his dynamic career.
Great heroes like Simón Bolívar certainly stand out, but so do other intriguing and captivating characters from Peru’s past. From the great Inca ruler Atahualpa to Francisco Pizarro to modern-day Peruvian presidents like Alberto Fujimori and Dina Boluarte, Peru has quite a story to tell!
In this audiobook, you will learn about the following:The origins of Peruvian civilizationThe rise and fall of the Inca EmpireThe explorations of conquistadors like Francisco PizarroRevolutionaries like Túpac Amaru II and resistance to Spanish rulePeru’s struggle for independence
