Sinopse

In "The Lake of Wine," Bernard Edward Joseph Capes weaves a rich tapestry of mystical realism, drawing readers into a world where the enchanting and the mundane coexist. Set against the backdrop of a serene yet enigmatic landscape, Capes explores themes of desire, loss, and the quest for transcendence through an intricately layered narrative style. Lyrical prose simulates the ebb and flow of the titular lake, reflecting both the characters' inner turmoil and the ethereal beauty of the surroundings, making this work a notable contribution to early 20th-century British fiction, a period characterized by its exploration of the subconscious and the supernatural. Capes, a prominent figure in early modern literature, possessed a diverse background in art, literature, and classical scholarship, which profoundly influenced his narrative sensibilities. His experiences as a traveler and his engagement with various cultural motifs reflect an eclectic disposition that informed his writing. This book, published in 1897, encapsulates his fascination with the intersection of reality and myth, showcasing his depth of understanding of human psychology and emotion. Readers captivated by imaginative storytelling and profound reflections on life will find "The Lake of Wine" a compelling read. Capes' ability to conjure vivid imagery and evoke deeper philosophical questions invites readers to ponder their own experiences of longing and fulfillment. This novel is recommended for those who appreciate literary depth and the haunting beauty of prose.

In this sequel to The Night Inside, a vampire couple’s relationship is tested by the modern world as a mysterious stranger hunts them down. With a dark embrace from five-hundred-year-old vampire Dimitri Rozokov, Ardeth Alexander left behind her mortal life in Toronto. Now they are attempting to forge a new life in Banff, Alberta.—and They share an unspoken agreement not to feed on humans and hunt wild animals off the beaten paths of the national park instead. However, their new reality is far from easy, and elk blood can never fully satisfy their hunger. Angry and unhappy, Ardeth longs for the life she left behind and returns to Toronto. But the machinations of a century-old Japanese vampire soon reunite the couple. Once a feudal lord, now a yakuza boss, Sademori Fujiwara shares his extraordinary life story. It is a tale that can answer the questions of love, mortality, and morality threatening to tear Ardeth and Dimitri apart for good. But the price for those answers is dangerously high . . . “Baker writes about the vampires next door . . . they bicker over petty, everyday things. They are jealous when a partner flirts with someone. They worry about paying the rent . . . ‘They’re Canadian,’ she says.” —The Vancouver Sun “Baker evokes the various figures from Japanese culture familiar in the West—yakuza, samurai and medieval court ladies and their pillow books—but she goes beyond clichés and invests these characters with a solidity and poignancy that contrast sharply with the simpler Canadian horror of The Night Inside. This is a more contemplative offering.” —Paragraph

Urban Fantasy. Paranormal Mystery. Everyday People.
A flash of something in the pages caught my eye, and I stopped. Thumbing back through the pages again, slower this time, I found it. It was about an inch thickness in…Mom’s handwriting…pages of it.

Abraham Stoker was born in Dublin, Ireland on the 8th of November 1847, the third of seven children.

His early years were plagued with such ill-health that he was unable to start school until the age of seven. He turned the long periods of recovery into an opportunity for thinking and said “I was naturally thoughtful, and the leisure of long illness gave opportunity for many thoughts which were fruitful according to their kind in later years”.

Strikingly at Trinity College, Dublin his health had returned with such vigour that he was named their University Athlete whilst also achieving a BA in Mathematics with honours.

At this time his interest in theatre became a job offer to be the Dublin Evening Mail’s theatre critic, co-owned by Sheridan Le Fanu. He now began to also write short stories and in 1872 ‘The Crystal Cup’ was published. An interest in art developed and he co-founded the Dublin Sketching Club.

In 1878 came marriage to Florence Balcombe. She had formerly been courted by Stoker’s acquaintance, Oscar Wilde. The marriage produced one child.

Stoker had some years before reviewed Henry Irving’s Hamlet and had dined with him. That friendship now resulted in a proposal from Irving to move to London and to manage his Lyceum Theatre. His numerous commercial innovations ensured both he and the theatre thrived. Irving would also often take Stoker with him when he toured abroad.

Despite this busy life Stoker continued to write and these works paved the way for his most famous creation, published in 1897, ‘Dracula’. It is rightly recognised as one of the greatest horror novels of all time and although not the first with a theme of Vampires, it is undoubtedly the most well-known.

Stoker also wrote poetry and many excellent short stories and continued to write novels and other works throughout his career.

Politically Stoker supported Home Rule, though only by peaceful means. He was also keen on following scientific trends particularly in medicine.

In 1902 his tenure at the Lyceum Theatre ended and although he continued to write his health was deteriorating, mainly due to a series of debilitating strokes.

Bram Stoker died on the 20th April 1912, in Pimlico, London. He was 64.
