Sinopse

Umbrella’s Windy Path explores the surprising history of the umbrella, revealing its journey from an ancient symbol of power to a ubiquitous everyday object. Delving into design evolution and material culture, the book uncovers intriguing facts such as the umbrella's initial use as a sunshade for the elite in civilizations like Egypt and China. It also highlights how advancements in technology and economic trends shaped the umbrella's design over centuries.

The book examines the umbrella's ancient origins, its transformation through various historical periods, and its adaptation to meet societal needs. By analyzing historical records, design catalogs, and museum collections, the book illustrates how the umbrella's purpose has been redefined by cultural values and technological possibilities.

Each chapter builds upon the last, tracing the umbrella's slow integration into European culture, its transformation during industrialization, and modern innovations like wind-resistant models. The book positions this cultural artifact as more than just a tool against the elements, but as a lens for understanding broader social and technological shifts.

Before the Hebrews established a kingdom and before the Phoenicians colonized much of the Mediterranean, the Canaanites were the most important group in the Levant for much of the Bronze Age and into the early Iron Age. Although the Canaanites never created a unified nation-state or kingdom, their importance in the ancient Near East cannot be understated. It was at least partially because of that fact that the Canaanites were unable to resist their larger and more powerful neighbors that the average person today knows so little about their history, but modern studies have revealed that they developed a unique religion that influenced non-Canaanite peoples and continued to be practiced in some form centuries after the Canaanites ceased to be an identifiable people. Furthermore, during the height of the Bronze Age the Canaanites provided important resources to the Egyptian and Hittite Empires and played a key role in the geopolitical game of chess between those two kingdoms. It also goes without saying that the Canaanites were also a factor in the establishment of the Kingdom of Israel, as the battles they lost to the Hebrews later became the foundation of the Jewish kingdom.
Today, the term “Philistine” is often used as a euphemism for a person who is particularly uncouth, uncultured, ignorant, and possibly violent. Most people probably do not know the etymology of the word when they use it, and those that do probably only know the Philistines as villains from the Old Testament who were the eternal enemies of the Hebrews prior to and immediately after the latter formed the kingdom of Israel. Others may know the Philistines from the Biblical story of David and Goliath, as the “giant” was not only much larger than David but also a Philistine leader who commanded a large host of men.

The war of the three realms begins here…
In the heart of the Samtoy Nation during the pre-colonial era of Philippine history, the world of Filipino heroes, deities, and mythological monsters collide in an ambitious re-telling of a classic Filipino epic.
Our story begins with Namongan, a healer and midwife from an isolated village in the Ilocos Region who discovers that she is destined to bear a child blessed by the Poon deities. This child is Lam-ang and he is the first Lakandian. Maturing at a rate unheard of amongst mere mortals, Lam-ang also possesses the strength of a hundred men and was trained to be the greatest warrior for good the mortal realm has ever seen.
Together with Mangmankik, an anito spirit assigned to look after him by the Poons, Lam-ang sets out on a quest to find the missing pieces of the Gayaman Amulet and rescue his father who was abducted by the insidious night creatures on the night that he was born.
This book covers the first half of the life of Lam-ang, derived from the Ilocano epic Biag ni Lam-ang. The story follows the adventures of our hero as he uncovers the truth about himself as well as the truth about his role in the war between the forces of good and evil that threatens not just the fate of the world of men but all the realms of the spirit world as well.
