The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is an American children's novel written by author L. Frank Baum and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. The first novel in the Oz books, the Kansas farm girl named Dorothy ends up in the magical Land of Oz after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their home by a tornado. Upon her arrival in Oz, she learns she cannot return home until she has destroyed the Wicked Witch of the West. The book was first published in the United States in May 1900 by the George M. Hill Company. In January 1901, the publishing company completed printing the first edition, a total of 10,000 copies, which quickly sold out. It had sold three million copies by the time it entered the public domain in 1956. It was often reprinted under the title The Wizard of Oz, which is the title of the successful 1902 Broadway musical adaptation as well as the classic 1939 live-action film. The ground-breaking success of both the original 1900 novel and the 1902 Broadway musical prompted Baum to write thirteen additional Oz books which serve as official sequels to the first story. Over a century later, the book is one of the best-known stories in American literature, and the Library of Congress has declared the work to be "America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale."

  • Ancient Mediterranean Cuisine: The History of Food and Drink across the Region in Antiquity - cover

    Ancient Mediterranean Cuisine:...

Despite the strides made in understanding ancient history, there are obvious difficulties in assessing what ancient societies ate and drank, even as advances in technology continue to open up new methods of analysis for food deposits in human remains and archaeological sites. In general, the majority of what ancient individuals ate did not last long, but it’s clear that the fundamental necessity to secure basic food requirements colored all aspects of life, including politics, and only societies that produced enough food to achieve a surplus could turn their attention to matters other than simple survival. For example, one of the most noteworthy things about Egypt was the grain production there, and that was the context in which the Egyptians’ advancements in art, culture, and science became possible.
Since food is a biological necessity for everyone, eating and drinking are often at the very center of social life. This was no different in ancient Greece, but, if anything, the social importance placed on food and wine in the Greek world was even more pronounced and had profound consequences for the rest of the world. As one modern historian aptly put it, “How classical Athens was fed is not a matter of marginal importance. Nothing less than the material base of a brilliant civilization is at issue.” Indeed, it was through the ability to create a food surplus that the ancient Greeks were able to establish their poleis and, from these, go on to develop the political and social structures that built the backbone of Western Civilization.
Indulgence is at the heart of modern perceptions of eating and drinking for the ancient Romans. The majority of primary sources depicting food and drink that have survived show rich patricians reclining at a table loaded with exotic foods, and Roman diners are often depicted as gorging themselves over numerous courses served over many hours.

A provocative new perspective on presidential power.

Border walls, school bathrooms, student loans, gun control, diversity, abortion, climate change—today, nothing seems out of reach for the president's pen. But after all the press releases, ceremonies, and speeches, shockingly little gets done. The American presidency promises to solve America's problems, but presidents' unilateral solutions are often weak, even empty.

Kenneth Lowande argues this is no accident. The US political system is not set up to allow presidents to solve major policy problems, yet it lays these problems at their doorstep, and there is no other elected official better positioned to attract attention by appearing to govern. Like any politician, presidents are strategic actors who seek symbolic wins. They pursue executive actions, even when they know that these will fail, because doing so allows them to put on a compelling show for key constituencies. But these empty presidential actions are not without their costs: they divert energy from effective government—and, over time, undermine public trust. Drawing on thousands of executive actions, news coverage, interviews, and presidential archives, False Front shows that the real root of presidential power is in what presidents can get away with not doing.

This book consists of two titles, which are about the following topics:
1 - The term "mind control" is often used in various contexts, but it broadly refers to different methods of influencing or taking control of the mind. The critical question is: whose mind is being controlled?
There are several methods of mind control, each stemming from different disciplines. Techniques for controlling others' minds are distinct from those used to influence one's own mind, which is why various types of mind control exist.
For those looking to change and influence the thoughts of others, learning hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is essential. While NLP primarily focuses on personal development, it provides insight into the personality traits of those you wish to influence.
For example, a common NLP technique involves covert or conversational hypnosis, where an individual subtly implants thoughts while engaging in seemingly normal conversation. Over time, the recipient may believe these ideas originated from their own thoughts, even though they were subtly guided by the influencer.
2 - Remorse, regret, and saying "I'm sorry" are crucial for effective and balanced social interactions. These concepts, when practiced, increase the chances of successful relationships. Ignoring or rejecting these elements can lead to criminal or deviant behavior, with victimization often being a central aspect. The phrase "I'm sorry" is one of the most powerful and complex expressions in communication.
Throughout history, the phrase "I'm sorry" has been a fundamental part of societal and cultural exchanges across various languages. Its significance lies in acknowledging human fallibility, as our actions or words can cause temporary anger or lasting psychological harm. Understanding the origins and meanings of "I'm sorry" can deepen one's appreciation of this important expression.
