Summary

Benjamin C. Alamar founded the first journal dedicated to sports statistics, the Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports. He developed and teaches a class on sports analytics for managers at the University of San Francisco and has published numerous cutting-edge studies on strategy and player evaluation. Today, he cochairs the sports statistics section of the International Statistics Institute and consults with several professional teams and businesses in sports analytics. There isn't a better representative of this emerging field to show diverse organizations how to implement analytics into their decision-making strategies, especially as analytic tools grow increasingly complex. Alamar provides a clear, easily digestible survey of the practice and a detailed understanding of analytics' vast possibilities. He explains how to evaluate different programs and put them to use. Using concrete examples from professional sports teams and case studies demonstrating the use and value of analytics in the field, Alamar designs a roadmap for managers, general managers, and other professionals as they build their own programs and teach their approach to others.

The age of competitive strategy may be past. Sophisticated managers are learning that handsome returns come directly from superior strategic execution - not strategic planning. Their method: hustle and get it right. A look at the financial-services industry provides valuable lessons. Few of the bases of competitive advantage exist; there are no economies of scale, few obstacles to product imitation, and minimal costs and time required to bring out a new product. The organization's people and their executional skills - not the company's fixed assets - determine the bottom line. Subjects covered include competitive decision making, corporate strategy, strategic planning, and strategy implementation.

Welcome to A Practice Built on CultureIn an orthodontic practice, great culture is about more than creating a good place for people to work, it can determine the success of the practice. A great workplace culture is one where everyone smiles, is genuinely happy to be there, and works together as a team. It’s clear to anyone entering the practice that something truly amazing is happening, and that amazing feeling translates to excellence in treatment and care.In Smiles Made Here: How Culture Forges Success in an Orthodontic Practice, Dr. Jeremiah Sturgill explains how Sturgill Orthodontics became a practice where team members—and patients—want to be. Using his own journey in building a practice as an example, he shares how other orthodontists can build an amazing culture in their practices by focusing on what matters most: providing excellent care while genuinely caring about people. From a different kind of morning huddle to showing heart in the workplace, coaching the team, understanding the value of autonomy, and creating an environment where people feel safe, Dr. Sturgill shows how focusing on culture can lead to an amazing transformation. In this book, Dr. Sturgill also shares answers to some of the most common questions that patients and parents of young patients often have about treatment, and how culture impacts the care at Sturgill Orthodontics. He talks about when treatment is needed, when to start, the art of the smile, and more. As a specialist in temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) and airway protective orthodontics, Dr. Sturgill also shares the important role orthodontics plays in treating problems of the jaw and airway. Finally, he discusses how the value of orthodontics goes beyond straightening teeth and how all orthodontists are not created equal—and culture is the differentiator.

An insider’s look at the SEC and the changes needed to strengthen the U.S. financial system

In 2008, Americans were reeling from the devastating financial crisis that caused the Great Recession. There were searing questions about how the crisis was allowed to happen and calls for immediate reform from Capital Hill, the news media, and the general public. Multiple scandals sent real fear through the investing community and brought unprecedented heat on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). There was little doubt that the SEC had to fix rules that permitted bad behavior, shake off decades of complacency and enforce existing laws.

Wall Street lawyer Norm Champ spent nearly 20 years dealing with the SEC on behalf of his clients and as an industry representative working to educate the agency about hedge funds. Believing he could help reform the deeply-flawed agency, Champ left his career in the private sector and joined the SEC. As Director of the Division of Investment Management, he became a key player in stabilizing trillions of dollars of investor capital while reenergizing the SEC’s culture and management.

In Going Public, Champ presents a rare, insider’s look at how the SEC operates and explains exactly how the agency impacts the overall economic health of the country. He examines the inner workings of hedge funds, economic policy and politics, investing, and inefficient and frustrating federal agencies. Engrossing and important, this book offers critical recommendations for policy changes that will create healthy, free-functioning markets and help Americans better prepare for the inevitable next crisis.
