Sinopse

He tells us that one day he was walking through the quiet streets of Seville when, for no apparent reason, he decided to enter the San Jerónimo neighborhood. There were some merchants who were full of joy, everyone sang and there was a wonderful atmosphere.
When he was about to leave the fair, a young man arrived, he asked him to please give him the photo of his beloved. Bécquer agreed and the boy recognized the portrait of the young woman immediately, told him that it was Amparo, a maiden who lived with them and that she was an orphan, that no one knew the whereabouts of her parents. Without further ado, the protagonist left Seville and returned 10 years later.
When he returned, everything had changed a lot, but the essence of the city was maintained and he remembered that happy fair, so he decided to return. To her surprise, the joy of that time no longer reigned and through a merchant she found out that some men had taken Amparo from Seville after fighting a lot because she was the daughter of a very wealthy family.

We all want the power and motivation to create change in our lives. But how to get that in a stumbling dance of one step forward and two steps back? Negative emotions run rampant in many people’s lives today; a reality that feels like a shrink wrap of suffering. Popular fallback “solutions” of performance-based goals and tools focus on extrinsic rewards like fame, wealth, or winning. But overuse of those rewards doesn’t work for the long term and in fact weakens our confidence and motivation over time, leaving us vulnerable to failure and shame. It doesn’t have to be that way. Through three decades of researching and tracking such universal struggles to change our behavior, Dr. Kyra Bobinet unveils the way out, using novel neuroscience research on a compelling new brain area, the habenula. In this book, she reveals the habenula’s powerful role in killing our motivation and causing anxiety and depression and offers a foolproof way to escape its clutches.

Hear an actual cylinder recording of Harry Houdini: "...Ladies and gentlemen. Introducing my original invention, the Water Torture Cell. Although there is nothing supernatural about it, I am willing to proffer the sum of $1,000.00 to anyone who can prove that it is possible to consume air inside of the Torture Cell when I'm locked up in it in the regulation manner after it has been filled with water. Should anything go wrong when I'm locked up, one of my assistants walks through the curtains, ready to rush in, demolishing the glass, allowing the water to flow out, in order to save my life.
    - I, Houdini, October 29, 1914, Flatbush, NY."

    “NOBODY UNDERSTANDS!”
I hear this frustrated cry from abused people a lot.
I felt the same way when I was recovering from emotional abuse at the hands of a narcissistic/borderline psychopath. If you try and tell people who have NO EXPERIENCE with a narcissist (there is no experience like being with a narcissist, its not their fault they can’t understand) about it they will either deny your experience, tell you you are exaggerating or look at you like you were crazy.
I can’t promise you that reading to this book is going to be a “total cure”, but I can promise that if you APPLY YOURSELF DILLIGENTLY, take notes, read and re-read the chapters, follow all instructions to the letter, with a tenacious resolve to get better you will feel an instant decrease in anxiety within the first 24 hours and should see huge improvements within the first 3 days.

Buddhist teachings and heart-centered practices from the "feminine paradigm" to embrace receptivity and bring more balance to your life, relationships, and the world.

With deeply thoughtful, lyrical prose, this book invites listeners to engage with the world from a unique perspective that encourages feeling, intuitive understanding, embodiment, interdependence, and sacredness. Weaving together classical Theravada Buddhist teachings and mindfulness practices, the book teaches us when and how to channel our receptive and active orientations—sometimes called the feminine and masculine paradigms—to feel more at home in ourselves and the world and drop more deeply into the Buddhist teachings on suffering and happiness.

Rebecca Bradshaw, a respected Buddhist teacher in the Insight Meditation community, offers teachings that are simple yet require us to explore aspects of ourselves that go against much of our social conditioning that values goal-oriented busyness, productivity, independence, outgoing energy, and other “active” qualities. When overemphasized, this orientation can cause destructive emotions and behaviors, but we can counter them by embracing more receptive qualities. The receptive or feminine paradigm takes us deeper into the heart of the classical Buddhist teachings, leading to openness and freedom of the heart-mind.

    Hitler's Army - Soldiers Nazis...

In Hitler's Army, Omer Bartov focuses on the titanic struggle between Germany and the Soviet Union—where the vast majority of German troops fought—to show how the savagery of war reshaped the army in Hitler's image. Both brutalized and brutalizing, these soldiers needed to see their bitter sacrifices as noble patriotism and to justify their own atrocities by seeing their victims as subhuman. In the unprecedented ferocity and catastrophic losses of the Eastern front, soldiers embraced the idea that the war was a defense of civilization against Jewish/Bolshevik barbarism, a war of racial survival to be waged at all costs. Bartov describes the incredible scale and destruction of the invasion of Russia in horrific detail. Even in the first months—often depicted as a time of easy victories—undermanned and ill-equipped German units were stretched to the breaking point by vast distances and bitter Soviet resistance. Bartov goes on to explore letters, diaries, military reports, and other sources, showing how widespread Hitler's views became among common fighting men—men who grew up, he reminds us, under the Nazi regime. In the end, they truly became Hitler's army.

This book sheds new light on how deeply Nazi ideology penetrated the nation. Hitler's Army makes an important correction not merely to the historical record but to how we see the world today.
