Sinopsis

In "A History of Germany from the Earliest Times to the Present Day," Bayard Taylor presents a comprehensive and meticulously researched account of Germany's rich historical tapestry. This ambitious work spans various epochs, from the ancient tribes to the modern nation-state, illuminating the political, social, and cultural dynamics that shaped Germany's evolution. Taylor's literary style is both accessible and erudite, weaving narrative techniques reminiscent of contemporary historiography while maintaining a clear structure that aids in comprehension. The book's context is particularly relevant, given the burgeoning nationalism and shifts in European power dynamics of the 19th century, which resonate in Taylor's analytical insights. Bayard Taylor was a prominent American travel writer, poet, and literary figure whose extensive travels in Europe profoundly influenced his worldview. His experiences, coupled with a keen interest in the cultural and historical fabric of Germany, motivated him to explore the complexities of its past in a format appealing to both scholars and general readers. Taylor's background in linguistics and literature enhances the depth of his historical narrative, allowing him to frame German history within a broader European context. This work is highly recommended for historians, students, and anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Germany's intricate past. Taylor's nuanced portrayal offers valuable insights into the forces that have shaped modern Germany, making it an essential read for those seeking to appreciate the historical roots of contemporary German society.

America today is lopsided. Although there are millions of Americans who disagree with the prevailing progressive orthodoxy, they nevertheless tolerate it to avoid heated debate. Meanwhile, progressives push their agenda relentlessly and passionately and have achieved dominance over many American institutions including the News Media, Big Tech, Education, entertainment, bureaucracy, and big business. These institutions operate outside the confines of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. This book describes the who, what, how, and why of the progressive agenda and suggests ways to slow down the deterioration of America.

A close look at failed US policies in the Middle East, offering a fresh perspective on how best to reorient goals in the region

In this book Alexandra Stark argues that the US approach to Yemen offers insights into the failures of American foreign policy throughout the Middle East. Stark makes the case that despite often being drawn into conflicts within Yemen, the United States has not achieved its policy goals because it has narrowly focused on counterterrorism and regional geopolitical competition rather than on the well-being of Yemenis themselves. She offers recommendations designed to reorient US policy in the Middle East in pursuit of US national security interests and to support the people of these countries in their efforts to make their own communities safe, secure, and prosperous.

The Thirty Years' War was one of the most horrific conflicts in history, and though it is widely viewed as a religious struggle, that was only part of the complicated war. Calvinists and Lutherans did not get along, and both persecuted some of the more radical Anabaptist sects. At the same time, one major motivation behind the war was Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II’s determination to rule all of the empire and not be just a figurehead. There were struggles between rulers and their estates over power, and Catholic France later entered the war on the side of the Protestants in order to counter the Habsburgs’ power.
The Battle of Breitenfeld, fought in September 1631, was one of the most decisive moments of the war. It was the first major Protestant victory and widely considered the crowning achievement of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus’ military career. Through his establishment of communication and supply lines at strategic points across the Baltic Sea, the securing of Protestant alliances, and his use of combined arms, amongst his other trademark techniques, the Swedish forces, against all odds, defeated their rivals. Such was the devastation inflicted upon their opponents that the Count of Tilly, the chief commander of the Catholic League's armies, had no other choice but to retreat. 6,000 or so Catholic soldiers were captured, many of them later incorporated into the Protestant forces. Whatever remained of the survivors vanished into the dark of the night.

    10 Ancient Roman Concepts That...

These ancient concepts come from an assortment of wisdom found in the time of the Roman Empire include:
The Tacitus Razor: “If you want to know who controls you, see who you’re not allowed to criticize.” This is how comedians accidently reveal a society's hierarchy—they call everyone naked, and soon discover who the king is.
The Slavery Syndrome. Roman historian Sallust: “Few men desire liberty; most men wish only for a just master.” Genuine liberty means making decisions 24/7; parsing right from wrong; solving pesky dilemmas using nothing but one’s own mind.
The Polybius Warning: 2nd century B.C. historian Polybius warned that a falling birthrate precedes civilizational collapse. Fewer births mean men and women have checked out. Polybius believed the Greek civilization fell due to its “low birth rate…”
The Pliny Principle: “It is wonderful how the mind is stirred and quickened into activity by brisk bodily exercise.”
The Uses of Folly. Roman historian Herodotus: “If a man insisted always on being serious, and never allowed himself a bit of fun and relaxation, he would go mad.”
    6. The Vitruvius Rule: Modern architects love asymmetrical structures, but Ancient Roman architect Vitruvius said a building out of proportions is like a deformed body. Nature herself “composed the human body” and the rest of creation using “due proportions.” The Vitruvius Rule: No symmetry? Off to cemetery.
    And more!
