Sinopse

Since her mother’s death, the beautiful but innocent Linetta Falaise has led a sheltered life under the wing of her kindly French Governess. So she is heartbroken to find that her beloved Mademoiselle is at death’s door and that she, Linetta, had unknowingly been living off her meagre savings for the last two years. As she now has no money, there is no alternative but for Linetta to travel to Paris and ask Mademoiselle’s niece, Marie-Ernestine, to help her find suitable employment, perhaps teaching English to French children.Almost as soon as she boards the cross-channel Steamer heading for Calais, her innocent eyes are opened to the wicked ways of the world when a strange man’s unwanted and frightening attentions drive her to seek the protection of a handsome and noble stranger, the Marquis of Darleston, who is travelling to Paris on a secret mission for the British Prime Minister. After they part company, Linetta is introduced to the heady glamour of Paris Society by the glamorous Marie-Ernestine, who is really the celebrated and infamous Blanche d’Antigney.Linetta is appalled by Les Grandes Cocottes, who sell love to the highest bidder, especially since she is expected to join them because she is so young and enchanting.Afraid, alone and beset by lecherous ‘gentlemen’, Linetta remembers the handsome distinguished Marquis she met on the Steamer and prays fervently that he will come to her rescue yet again.

All editions contain a brief preface, by "John H. Watson, M.D.", that assures readers that as of the date of publication (1917), Holmes is long retired from his profession of detective but is still alive and well, albeit suffering from a touch of rheumatism.

The first instalment in a BRAND NEW series from bestselling author Patricia McBride
With war looming, it's a dark chapter for the Library Girls
    1940, London
When Cordelia accepts the post of head librarian in Silver Town Library, her mother is more than a little disapproving. The East End has high levels of poverty and illiteracy, and her mother says it’s no place for a woman of her status.
But Cordelia is determined to make a difference in these times of strife, and along with her colleagues, Jane and Mavis, she begins to help the local community.
And maybe even a romance will blossom, giving Cordelia the strength to make it through the chaos and destruction that constantly threatens their livelihood.
Against a background of war, air raids and rationing, it becomes clear the library is more than a building filled with books - it is the beating heart of a community refusing to be torn apart.

William Evans Burton was born in London on the 24th September 1804.

Initially set for a career in the church he attended St. Paul's School in London. At 18, after the death of his father, he took charge of the family printing concern. He established a monthly magazine, which although a failure, brought him several theatrical acquaintances which then lured him towards the stage.

For several years he acted in low comedies around the provinces before debuting, to good notices, in London. In 1833 his own play ‘Ellen Wareham’, was, somewhat unusually put on at five different theatres on the same evening.

In 1834 his marriage of 10 years failed and he decided to relocate, by himself, to America. He soon leased a theatre, which he renamed ‘Burton’s Theatre’, in New York.

Three years later he established, with Edgar Allan Poe as its editor, the Gentleman’s Magazine in Philadelphia and wrote one of the earliest detective stories for it; ‘The Secret Cell’.

He and Poe had a difficult relationship, added to which Burton was frequently away in acting roles in other cities. By 1840 he had fired Poe and then sold the magazine to finance renovation work on his theatre, which some time later failed. Burton spend much of his remaining years editing magazines and writing books.

William E Burton died on the 10th February 1860 in New York City.

He left his fortune, among which was a library of over 100,000 books, to charity. His separated wife from decades earlier challenged the will and created legal history in eventually gaining ownership of the estate.

And yet I can’t seem to keep my panties on for five minutes when we’re alone together. He keeps melting them right off. With that sexy voice, those confident hands, the way he brings my body wildly to life, he’s proved my libido hasn’t gone into permanent, post-divorce hibernation after all.
Surely there’s no harm in being enemies with benefits… Right?
    ***
When Violet Boden asks me to take her Divorce Virginity, the only thing I can think is—come again?
No, seriously, come again. And again and again, until both of us are so satisfied we can’t remember the people who did us wrong. Best if we keep conversation to a minimum, though, considering I drive her crazy. She drives me crazy sometimes, too.
But she’s also sweet, loyal, fearless, and so much fun she’s making it damn hard not to fall for her.
But how to convince a woman who’s put me in the emotional no-fly zone that I deserve a place in her heart? As well as in her panties…
