Synopsis

Prologue.

Homer and Hesiod, who encapsulated human desires and ideals, as well as human limitations and imagination, highlight humanity through their mythological elements. Unlike Bulfinch, who viewed myths as tools for Enlightenment teachings, Homer and Hesiod prioritize human values such as honor, courage, and labor. For them, the Greek human is a curious being, questioning everything and exploring to understand, embodying a fantastical race. They challenge the authority of the gods by integrating the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences into a systematic conception of knowledge. Stripping away the myths shrouded in clouds, they reveal the clarity of all concepts under the bright Mediterranean sunlight. Dutch historian Johan Huizinga also illuminated the dark ages with his work "The Autumn of the Middle Ages" (1919), encouraging a deeper perspective on life through the living humanities.Through humanistic thought grounded in history, we come to understand and engage with the world. By probing into humanistic questions and answers, we uncover symbols of play embedded in the twilight and moonlight, filling life with fantasy. The quality of fantasy is determined by the accumulated knowledge and intellectual capacity of individuals. When the journey of fantasy is beneficial and enjoyable, it transforms into genuine play, yielding riches for oneself and others.

The emergence of the pharaohs marked the beginning of one of history’s most iconic civilizations. In the early dynastic period around 3100 BCE, Egypt underwent a dramatic transformation as Upper and Lower Egypt were unified under a single ruler, traditionally identified as King Narmer or Menes. This unification not only established centralized rule but also laid the foundations for a dynastic tradition that would endure for millennia. The pharaoh, whose name means “great house,” came to be seen as both a political leader and a divine figure, embodying the will of the gods on earth.
As Egypt’s first kings consolidated power, they created administrative systems to manage resources, command armies, and oversee large-scale construction projects. Hierarchical governance emerged, with officials and scribes acting under the pharaoh’s authority to maintain order throughout the land. This new system allowed the pharaohs to centralize authority, control the fertile Nile Valley, and ensure the production and redistribution of grain and other goods, which became critical for sustaining a growing population and for asserting royal dominance.
Religious ideology played a key role in solidifying the power of the pharaohs. They were often depicted as the sons of deities, particularly associated with the sun god Ra and the sky god Horus. Temples were erected not just as places of worship, but as instruments of royal propaganda, showcasing the divine legitimacy of the ruler. Rituals, festivals, and monumental inscriptions reinforced the pharaoh’s sacred status and his role in maintaining ma’at, the cosmic order of balance and harmony.

Pirates have an almost mythical status in the public imagination - we think of rogue heroes riding the high seas and 'X marks the spot'. But this image is flawed at best.

Using contemporary sources, Nigel Cawthorne turns the spotlight on the reality of pirate life, revealing the truth behind the legends. It gives us an insight into infamous the men and women who plundered ship and shore, including Captain Kidd, Blackbeard and Mary Read. We learn of the hazy distinction between pirates and state-approved privateers who were used to maintain empire, as well as the Port Royal pirate base in Jamaica - known as the 'wickedest city in the world'.

Including details of various pirate exploits, as well as their weapons, ships and unhappy victims, this fascinating read will divide fact from slippery fiction.

This audiobook has been recorded using Text to speech (TTS).

Aliens have been around since the dawn of time. Mankind has given them many names. Angels, ghosts, demons and more. We look to the skies and wonder, but the truth about aliens visiting planet earth is much more profound. It is so startling and so strange that nobody has thought to look in that particular direction.

Our ancestors developed ways of contacting these aliens and they called them gods. They were beings of light, shining ones, watchers. They were both good and bad, mirroring humanity. They gave great knowledge and after tens of thousands of years mankind suddenly had the ability to create civilization. We built huge monuments in their name and we recorded our contact with them in fables, myths, legends, folklore and religion. We even created grand myths, such as Atlantis, to explain it.

They were our gods and we worshipped them and recorded their powers, deeds and lives. These gods of the world were in fact not real gods, whatever that means. They were in fact alien invaders and we were the subjects of their rule.

This is the true story of the aliens in the ancient world.

To most people in the West, particularly the youth, the mere mention of Japan immediately evokes various images. A delectable rainbow of sushi, hand-rolled temaki, and platters of crispy, golden-brown tempura. An idyllic, crystal-clear lake flanked by trees covered with delicate, cotton-candy-pink sakura blossoms. A montage of unique, hand-drawn cartoons that are a masterful mix of delightfully exaggerated proportions, features, and colors, and elements of arresting realism, collectively known as “anime.”
Ninjas are, without a doubt, one of the most timeless and far-reaching cultural staples ever to emerge from Japan. They have become a global phenomenon, and there are countless depictions of ninjas in comic books, films, TV shows, video games, toys, and other forms of popular culture around the world, not to mention their continued relevance as a “conventional” go-to Halloween costume. Kids across the world are intimately familiar with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Snake Eyes from the G.I. Joe franchise, Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, and Black Noir from The Boys. Ninjas have also been featured in a slew of other international movies and TV shows, among them the 1986 Filipino film The Legend of Ninja-Kol, the 2010 Norwegian film Norwegian Ninja, the 1982 Turkish film Holy Sword, and the 2002 New Zealand film Tongan Ninja.
Similarly, the samurai are among the most iconic warriors in history. The fighting elite of feudal Japan, they have played a dominant role in the country's life for over a thousand years. Even today, a century and a half after the rule of the samurai has formally ended, they remain a powerful symbol of martial might, and the embodiment of the stoic warrior.
