This meticulously researched account employs a narrative style that intertwines historical facts with deeply personal testimonies, vividly illustrating the societal and religious tensions of the era. The Thirteen Pillars is the first book in the Doctrine of Discipline series. It is not self-help. It is doctrine.
Author and combat veteran Shawn C. O'Neil studied thirty-nine historical exemplars across 2,500 years of warfare, philosophy, science, and leadership to answer one question: what are the actual operating principles the most disciplined people in history share?
The result is thirteen pillars. Each pillar contains a law. Not a suggestion. Not a guideline. A law — non-negotiable, observable, repeatable.
Where David Goggins gave testimony, this book gives architecture. Where Jocko Willink wrote tactical leadership, this book goes deeper into the philosophical root system underneath it. Where Jordan Peterson built meaning through mythology, this book tests those frameworks in real historical lives. Where Ryan Holiday studied Stoicism from the outside, this book is written from inside the tradition by someone who lived it. Where John C. Maxwell codified the laws of leadership, this book codifies the laws of discipline that leadership requires.
The thirty-nine figures span combat, resistance movements, philosophy, governance, science, and art. Marcus Aurelius. Frederick Douglass. Harriet Tubman. Viktor Frankl. Nikola Tesla. Miyamoto Musashi. Some are famous. Several are deliberately obscure because the unknown exemplars carry the clearest signal. They built discipline to survive, not to perform.
This is a book about order, standards, and building a life that holds under pressure. It is written for men who are done with motivation and ready for doctrine.
The Thirteen Pillars. Builds the Man.

Power. Fear. Violence. These three idols of Christian nationalism are corrupting American Christianity.

Andrew Whitehead is a leading scholar on Christian nationalism in America and speaks widely on its effects within Christian communities. In this book, he shares his journey and reveals how Christian nationalism threatens the spiritual lives of American Christians and the church.

Whitehead shows how Christians harm their neighbors when they embrace the idols of power, fear, and violence. He uses two key examples—racism and xenophobia—to demonstrate that these idols violate core Christian beliefs. Through stories, he illuminates expressions of Christianity that confront Christian nationalism and offer a faithful path forward.

American Idolatry encourages further conversation about what Christian nationalism threatens, how to face it, and why it is vitally important to do so. It will help identify Christian nationalism and build a framework that makes sense of the relationship between faith and the current political and cultural context.

    A Letter Concerning Toleration

Letter Concerning Toleration by John Locke was originally published in 1689. Its initial publication was in Latin, though it was immediately translated into other languages. In this "letter" addressed to an anonymous "Honored Sir" (actually Locke's close friend Philip von Limborch, who published it without Locke's knowledge) Locke argues for a new understanding of the relationship between religion and government. One of the founders of Empiricism, Locke develops a philosophy that is contrary to the one expressed by Thomas Hobbes in Leviathan, primarily because it supports toleration for various Christian denominations. Locke's work appeared amidst a fear that Catholicism might be taking over England, and responds to the problem of religion and government by proposing toleration as the answer. Unlike Hobbes, who saw uniformity of religion as the key to a well-functioning civil society, Locke argues that more religious groups actually prevent civil unrest. Locke argues that civil unrest results from confrontations caused by any magistrate's attempt to prevent different religions from being practiced, rather than tolerating their proliferation. Locke's primary goal is to "distinguish exactly the business of civil government from that of religion." He makes use of extensive argument from analogy to accomplish his goal, and relies on several key points. The thing that he wants to persuade the reader of is that government is instituted to promote external interests, relating to life, liberty, and the general welfare, while the church exists to promote internal interests, i.e., salvation. The two serve separate functions, and so, must be considered to be separate institutions. (Summary from Wikipedia)

“Kids are great. It’s a unique process that everyone should experience.” Except that today, 1 in 20 French people refuse to have children. What are the reasons for this “voluntary infertility?”
Do we really know why we have children? Isn’t having children an obstacle to personal and professional development? In an overpopulated and polluted world, isn’t it selfish to take up too much space by having a family? Don’t children cost too much to individuals and to society?
The author investigates with dozens of women and men for whom the “duty to procreate” rings hollow. Among these “non-parents” are exclusive lovers, artists, careerists, religious people, traumatized children, eternal teenagers, environmentalists, convinced Malthusians, as well as feminist activists who have made their refusal to give birth a standard, in order to assert themselves in a society that praises all mothers and family values.
