Summary

Embark on a global cheese adventure! Cheese Around the Globe stands apart as more than your typical guide to cheese. The book serves as an extensive exploration of the wide variety of cheese traditions across the globe. Our exploration focuses on the ways historical events, cultural traditions and economic factors influence the development of cheese. We cover production. We examine trade. We look at consumption. We discover unique stories as we move from Germany's meticulous approach to Italy's traditional methods. We reveal national policies. We see technological advancements. We go inside family farms. We also look at huge corporations. Discover the secrets of Dutch co-ops. Learn about French terroir. Explore American innovation. Understand New Zealand's "clean green" image. This book will help you. Cheese will be clear.

Readers will find the true interconnectedness that other books do not provide. Most literature examines either a specific country or cheese style and limits itself to tasting notes. We connect the dots. The book demonstrates the influence of global forces on local cheese-making traditions. We reveal the hidden politics of cheese. We explore sustainability challenges. We expose controversial issues like Mafia involvement. We showcase the people behind the cheese. This book delivers a comprehensive critical analysis in an engaging way which stands apart from all other publications. It is the complete go to guide.

Recently I experienced a major stroke. I was completely paralyzed on the right side of my body. It was a “Stroke” of good fortune. This is our opportunity as Brahmins, to transform those which others would view as tragedy into an accumulation of power and blessings. My first thought when I was laying in the hospital, on the first day was “where the hell is Baba when you need him?” I had a typical, unknowledgeable, weak, and powerless reaction, which caused sorrow. The second day, an instrument sister brought a murli and read it to me in which Baba answered me saying “Baba only helps those who have courage”. Now my thought was “I have the most courage of anyone I know.” And I decided at that moment to put it into practice. Instead of the old bhakti sanskars playing their endless tune of begging for help etc. I decided to claim my rights as a child of the king. Instantly I found myself in Baba’s lap. Never did he leave me after that, nor did I leave him. Baba has told us that if we take one small step of courage, he will carry us another thousand etc. That was my practical experience.

At the dawn of the twentieth century, José Cuervo inherited his family's humble distillery, La Rojeña, in the Tequila Valley. Within a decade, it would become Mexico's leading producer of tequila. But when the Mexican Revolution erupted, a charge of treason and a death threat against him by Pancho Villa forced Cuervo to flee. His disappearance turned him into an obscure, shadowy historical figure.

In Tequila Wars, award-winning author Ted Genoways restores Cuervo to his place as a key player in Mexico's formative period. Before the revolution, Cuervo's acclaim spread worldwide, and once war broke out, Cuervo remained an impresario, kingmaker, and cultural force. In the face of his own government's corruption and the nationalism of his northern neighbors, Cuervo reached American drinkers by establishing Mexico’s covert form of cross-border commerce with the United States. As the largest and most important distilleries in the Tequila Valley recognized the threat posed by Mexico's unraveling, Cuervo also lobbied for suspending normal competition in favor of "a union of tequila makers"—what would become the first Mexican cartel.

The first biography of Cuervo, Tequila Wars uncovers the history of the man who would forever change not only the business of tequila, but international relations between Mexico and the United States.
