Sinopse

"Rugged Canyon Jumps" delivers a comprehensive examination of advanced canyoneering, addressing the alarming 47% increase in incidents over the past decade through a systematic approach to training and preparation. This authoritative guide integrates three essential components: technical rope skills, terrain analysis, and physical conditioning, presenting them through a research-backed framework that combines geological data, climbing accident reports, and sports medicine findings. The book distinguishes itself by bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, using scientific principles to explain everything from rope dynamics to rock composition. Readers progress through carefully structured modules that build from fundamental concepts to advanced techniques, with each chapter offering practical exercises and real-world scenarios. The inclusion of detailed topographical mapping techniques, both traditional and digital, alongside specific training protocols developed with sports physiologists, provides a thorough foundation for safe and successful canyoneering. What sets this work apart is its evidence-based approach, incorporating data from multiple disciplines including geology, meteorology, and sports science. The book's focus on arid environment technical canyoneering is enriched by contributions from search and rescue professionals, making it an invaluable resource for intermediate-level canyoneers and outdoor professionals alike. Through its methodical presentation of route planning examples, decision-making frameworks, and emergency protocols, the book creates a comprehensive roadmap for developing technical expertise while emphasizing safety and environmental awareness.

The delightfully comic account of a British couple and their imported cats starting over in a new country continues in Bucket to Greece Volume 3. Victor and Marigold really feel the heat of May when the ever precarious water supply runs dry, and Victor suffers self-doubt over his burgeoning mastery of the Greek language. No longer cheffing at the local taverna, Victor keeps busy in the kitchen at home, experimenting with the glut of garden courgettes.

Landing a part-time job as a tour guide to Ancient Olympia offers an opportunity to pontificate to a captive audience. Victor is forced to put his foot down when Marigold demands a swimming pool and air conditioning, convincing her they pose hygiene risks. Fortunately the arrival of an unexpected visitor delights and distracts Marigold, until catastrophe strikes when a moron takes a pot shot at her beloved feline, Catastrophe.

With marriage on his mind, Barry plans a permanent move to Greece and joins Victor in an early-morning snail hunt, leading to the great bucket breakout. A now sober Guzim secures employment on the coast with a crew that rumour soon has it are homicidal bandits. Spiros, smitten with the fragrant Filipino caregiver he employs to live-in with his infirm uncle, persuades Victor to help him poach some potential house buyers from under the despised Harold's nose.

“With her typically American intrepidness, her thirst for a good story and her power of observation, Hermance closes-in on the Portuguese she encounters along the way, bringing to us a psychological picture of the Portuguese individual and society that you won´t find on expat guides. Lastly, her unusual grasp for ´Portuguese quaintness´ also makes this book worth buying.” David Peres Rebelo

A charming, life-changing guide to living a longer, happier, healthier life, rooted in Korean self-care. From the country scientists predict will top longevity charts in 2030.
Ssukgat, or Chrysanthemum greens, are treasured in Korean culture for their healing abilities. You can coax its withered stalks to bloom again, with sun, water, soil, and care. It’s a fitting metaphor for eco-entrepreneur and CEO Michelle Jungmin Bang, who found herself in excruciating pain due to the constant sacrificing of her health and wellness for work—a trade many of us make daily.
Thus started her fascinating journey to overhaul her health and reconnect with her heritage in South Korea. She found answers in the mountains with Buddhist nuns and the keys to microbiome health, a seaside village with haenyeo (female free divers who forage for seafood) and their practice of healing with breath, centenarians with easily adoptable daily habits, and Korean bathhouse culture and its “wellness for everyone” approach to youthful skin. Natural, effective, and environmentally conscious, these ancient traditions have been passed down for centuries in Asia, like gifted heirlooms, and they quietly and radically shift our philosophies on well-being towards preventative care.
Informed by her travels, research, and East-West nutrition training, Michelle reflects on how we can eat for healing, live sustainably, reconnect with nature, form deeper relationships with the Korean concept of Jeong (the warm, invisible connection between loved ones and places), and more. Also included are simple and delicious healing recipes that can be used for recovery, like a mushroom broth the Buddhist nuns turn to for colds; her grandmother’s secret Myeolchi (anchovy) broth; Samgyetang (chicken and ginseng soup) for combatting fatigue; as well as Hoedeopbap (raw fish bibimbap), her most-requested dish that requires no cooking.
Sun & Ssukgat is on a mission to empower anyone stuck in the unhealthy whirlwind of modern life to transform our well-being in the little things we do every single day.

    The Turpentine Tree

The Turpentine Tree is an enduring symbol of memory, fragile but enduring the passage of time and still persisting: in the title poem, Lynne Hjelmgaard describes it 'a coppery faux god / with wildly twisted branches'. It might slip into the void, but here it is for now 'flying into the eye of the storm.' Hjelmgaard employs strong, sensuous imagery to capture moments from across her remarkable life.
These are portraits of family, friends and relationships – of Hjelmgaard's uprooted life, including a life at sea, the subsequent displacement, widowhood and search for connections. Often the remembrances in poems are sweet-bitter, recalling friends and lovers lost, including the writer's late partner Dannie Abse. These explorations of loss are extremely moving, but the poems also communicate the value of a rich bank of memories which range around from spectating on a girl being punished at camp ('Summer Camp'), a Florida roadtrip with friends ('1969'), or an 'Evening Flight from Copenhagen.' Very often the speakers are in transit, travelling through, and so the poems hold onto intense, lucid or epiphanic moments.
There's an honesty, easiness and at times humour about the language. Vulnerability and strength walk side by side to give an extraordinary depth of experience for the reader. There's a visitation from her dead lover; her husband's spirit is safe in her wardrobe in a plastic bag; her father's ghost is on a WWII battleship in Norfolk Harbour and later waits for her in a crowd of strangers at Miami airport.
These snapshots are sometimes based on real photographs, or at other times are imaginary photographs; Hjelmgaard questions 'Did we really exist? Yes – / the photograph answers' ('The Photograph Answers'). Threaded throughout all these memories is the gorgeous vividness of nature – the sea, animals, and creatures – which take speakers out of human concerns to a more connected relation with the world. The Turpentine Tree is about intangible presences which open up memory and move beyond it, towards a universal interconnectedness.
How far back does grief go? What is lost, what can be found? Is memory transferred between us without words, years later, is the unsayable felt?
(from 'On the Atlantic Coast of Spain')
'Lynne Hjelmgaard is truthful yet unrepentant. An American poet, determined to be alive.' - Robert Minhinnick, author of Diary of the Last Man
'These poems keep a distinctive balance between distance and closeness – a  wide span across decades, between continents, hand in hand with crisp small moments that encapsulate a life. Closeness, too, in the intimacies at the heart of this collection, held with a lucid sensitivity that's never sentimental, staying true to individual relationships while melting into universal themes of love, loss, letting go and celebration.' -   Philip Gross, author of The Thirteenth Angel
'Who is this person from so many places? Lynne Hjelmgaard grew up in Stuyvesant Town NYC, lived in Denmark, in Paris, in England, in the Caribbean -- did she really sail on a boat? What is she telling us? Everything she carries within, at any time. A unique, unusual life reflected on in poems of intimate address to the reader/companion. Delicate, beautiful, detailed from an amazing memory. Childhood, womanhood, children, aging, loves, mixed as everything is in the one body/mind. Tender and magical.' - Alice Notley, author of For the Ride

Some stories cling to us long after they’re told. A flicker of doubt, a chill that lingers, a whisper that says the world is not as ordinary as we like to believe. Across the towns, moors, and coastlines of the United Kingdom, mysteries take root. They are retold in pubs and passed down in families, woven into the fabric of our landscapes until fact and folklore blur together.
This book began as a podcast—a chance to explore some of Britain’s most intriguing unsolved mysteries. From strange lights in the sky to vanished men, haunted houses to entire stretches of countryside steeped in unease, each episode set out to capture both the history and the enduring sense of the uncanny that clings to these tales.
Collected here, the stories form something different. Read together, they reveal patterns: how ordinary lives collide with the inexplicable, how mystery resists tidy explanation, and how the unknown remains part of our national imagination. These aren’t simply curiosities of the past—they are living stories, reshaped every time they are retold.
Whether you are returning to these stories after listening to the podcast, or discovering them for the first time, I invite you to treat them as more than puzzles. They are glimpses into the strange corners of our history, reminders that even in an age of reason and technology, mystery endures.
Turn the page, and step into a Britain where history, mystery, and imagination meet.
