Sinopsis

"Golf Champions" presents a captivating journey through professional golf's evolution, examining how legendary players transformed a niche sport into a global phenomenon. The book meticulously traces golf's development from the late 19th century to modern times, focusing on the technical innovations, mental approaches, and strategic developments that revolutionized the game.

Through the lens of iconic figures like Old Tom Morris, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods, readers discover how each champion's unique contributions shaped modern golf. The narrative skillfully weaves together three main elements: technical innovations in playing style, revolutionary competitive mindsets, and golf's transformation into a worldwide sport.

Supporting these themes with rich statistical analysis and historical records, the book examines how champions adapted to changing equipment and course conditions while establishing new standards for professional excellence. Particularly fascinating is the exploration of Ben Hogan's methodical practice routines and Jack Nicklaus's strategic course management, which continue to influence players today.

The chronological progression through distinct eras connects golf's development to broader societal changes, including technological advancement and shifting cultural perspectives. Each chapter focuses on pivotal decades and their dominant players, examining everything from equipment evolution to teaching methods. This comprehensive approach, supported by tournament records and first-hand accounts, makes the book an invaluable resource for both dedicated golf enthusiasts and newcomers to the sport who want to understand how the game's greatest champions shaped its history.

Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) was a pre-revolutionary American pastor and academic in Massachusetts, and is also widely considered to be both the last of the great Puritans, and a founder of modern evangelicalism. In 1732, his church and many churches in the surrounding region experienced “The Great Awakening”, a massive religious revival. The Great Awakening saw many people having heightened “affections”, or emotions, in response to their increased spirituality – this included excessive weeping, joyous outbursts, and many other manifestations that concerned more conservative people around them. Edwards wrote Religious Affections in order to show that affections could be a legitimate part of Christian spirituality, but only when conjoined with sound theology and godly practice. The book now stands as a classic in the field of Christian spirituality. (Summary by Matthew James Gray)

McCormack was asked two questions by his children that unerringly targeted issues he had struggled with his entire life: "Who are you?" and "What is life about?" Hatching Charlie, his attempt to respond, rocketed him down a wormhole through time, his past made present. He re-lives the disruptions of military family life, family violence, the racism of the Jim Crowe South, and the tidal wave of fear and confusion when exiled to a boarding school in France as a child.
With unalloyed frankness, McCormack, an award-winning psychotherapist, author, and lecturer, takes us into the mental illness in his own family, and the destructive influence of his cratered childhood upon his adulthood. During this journey, we go behind the scenes of psychiatric treatment, including a vivid portrayal of McCormack’s experience in psychoanalysis and as a psychiatric social worker in a locked-door inpatient treatment unit. There, we become engulfed in penetrating horror and self-doubt when confronted with the suicide of several patients, as well as the profound sense of fulfillment experienced when able to help those who had been unable to help themselves.
In his striving for happiness and meaning, McCormack arrives at the realization that there was an enduring block to happiness and that it resided within himself. Rejecting this self-limiting fate, he pecks away at the shells that confine him like a Russian nesting doll and discovers first-hand the hidden power of incomplete mourning to constrict happiness like English ivy strangles a tree. In this moving memoir, there is wisdom about life, love, and relationships that will bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your face.

"What would make you come back?" the Chinese people asked. "What is so important that you would risk your life to tell us?" Jonathan eagerly explained to them what had brought him back to China, even after so many foreigners had been killed: the need to share the gospel. As a poor Canadian farm boy, Jonathan Goforth had no idea that he would spend most of his life braving disaster, danger, and disease to share God's love with the people of China. But when God led him to do just that, nothing, not even the violent Boxer Rebellion, would stop Jonathan and his family from answering God's call. Making their home in China, the Goforths opened their doors to as many as five thousand visitors a month, all of whom heard the gospel message. Their nearly fifty years of service to a nation in need would leave behind a legacy of many thousands of Chinese Christians.
