  A personal, intimate, memoir spanning 70 years, in three parts, describing my childhood in the UK and New Zealand, my 35 years as a New Zealand diplomat, and the hundreds of amazing individuals I met on the way, from farming folk to Kings, Queens and Presidents. Part One is the story of an English boy growing up on a farm in rural Devon and Somerset in an extended family, and then, aged 9, moving to rural New Zealand. It covers my school years, my year as a volunteer teacher, aged 17, at an all boys school, in the South Pacific Kingdom of Tonga and my year as a university student in a still divided Germany. Part Two describes my career as a junior, then senior, New Zealand diplomat, and my postings in Fiji, Canada, Geneva, Samoa, Germany and Singapore, the last three as Ambassador. Part Three argues that New Zealand should become a republic in the Commonwealth, with its own Head of State. It describes, too, my liberating journey from Anglicanism to freedom from any religion. I have aimed to tell the memoir with a sense of humour, humility and (for the most part) optimism!

  The history of China in the twentieth century is comprised of a long series of shocks: the 1911 revolution, the civil war between the communists and the nationalists, the Japanese invasion, the revolution, the various catastrophic campaigns initiated by Chairman Mao between 1949 and 1976, its great opening to the world under Deng, and the Tiananmen Square Massacre. 
   
   
   
  Yuan-tsung Chen lived through most of it, and at certain points in close proximity to the seat of communist power. Born in Shanghai in 1929, she came to know Zhou En-Lai as a young girl while living in Chongqing, where Chiang Kai-Shek's government had relocated to, during the war against Japan. That connection to Zhou helped her save her husband's life in Cultural Revolution. After the communists took power, she obtained a job in one of the culture ministries. She frequently engaged with the upper echelon of the party and was a first-hand witness to some of the purges that the regime regularly initiated. Eventually, the commissar she worked under was denounced in 1957, and she barely escaped being purged herself. Later, during Cultural Revolution, she and her husband were purged and sent to live in a rough, poor area. They finally moved to Hong Kong, with Zhou's permission, in 1971. Chen gives a first-hand account of what life was like in the period before the revolution and in Mao's China.

  On May 31, 1988, at the request of General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, and standing below a bust of Lenin, Reagan spoke to and answered questions from a large audience of students and teachers at Moscow State University.  
  Reagan says “I wish you success” in Russian to the students on their upcoming exams. Reagan brings “a message of peace and good will and hope for a growing friendship and closeness between our two peoples.”  
  An information revolution is sweeping the globe that will transform our lives with robots, genetic coding, spacecraft, and other technologies. The key to progress is economic freedom. Entrepreneurs with the courage to take risks “are responsible for almost all the economic growth in the United States.”  
  The Republic of Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, India, and China are seeing the power of economic freedom. Freedom “is the continuing revolution of the marketplace.”  
  Nations “must renounce, once and for all, the right to an expansionist foreign policy.” “People do not make wars; governments do.” “Americans seek always to make friends of old antagonists”, for example, Britain, Germany, and Japan.  
  Nothing would please me more than to see “a growing, exuberant, exporting Soviet Union that had opened up to economic freedom”. In this Moscow spring of May 1988, we hope for a new world of reconciliation, freedom, and peace. 
  Following the speech, Reagan fields questions from the audience on a variety of topics: the START ballistic missile treaty, how young people have changed since he was a student, conflicts in Namibia and Nicaragua, the return of missing Soviet soldiers from Afghanistan, what’s unique about the U.S. Constitution, Reagan’s speaking plan on the mashed-potato circuit after retiring, American Indians, and Soviet dissidents.

  Marx started work on this book in January 1847, as can be judged from Engel's letter to Marx on January 15, 1847. By the beginning of April 1847, Marx's work was completed in the main and had gone to the press. On June 15, 1847, he wrote a short foreword.Published in Paris and Brussels in 1847, the book was not republished in full during Marx's lifetime. Excerpts from section five of Chapter Two appeared in different years, mostly between 1872 - 1875 in papers such as La Emancipacion, Der Volksstaat, Social-Demokrat, and others. In 1880 Marx attempted to publish the Poverty of Philosophy in the French socialist newspaper L'Égalité, the organ of the French Workers' Party, but only the foreword and section one of Chapter One were published.This translation is from the original 1847 French edition. It has been updated to also include the changes/corrections Marx made in the copy of the book he presented to N. Utina in 1876, as well as the corrections made by Frederick Engels in the second French edition and the German editions of 1885 and 1892. The first English edition of this work was published in 1900 by Twentieth Century Press.
