Sinopsis

What happens when classrooms grow empty, hospitals overflow with the elderly, and the social contract begins to unravel? The Vanishing Future offers a professional, data-driven exploration of the demographic ticking clock and its profound impact on education, healthcare, and welfare systems worldwide. With precision and clarity, the book traces how low fertility reshapes societies: shrinking school enrollments destabilize education systems, aging populations strain healthcare infrastructure, and social safety nets face unprecedented pressure. Drawing on international case studies and historical comparisons, it exposes both the risks of inaction and the opportunities for reform.Designed for professionals, academics, and policymakers, The Vanishing Future not only diagnoses the problem but also proposes frameworks for sustainability—rethinking policies, institutions, and values in the face of demographic decline. It is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand and address one of the most pressing challenges of the 21st century.

The foundation of Roman society was built upon a complex hierarchy that influenced daily life, social interactions, and political structures. At its core, the Roman family served as the most fundamental unit, shaping personal identity, social standing, and economic stability. The paterfamilias, or male head of the household, wielded significant authority over his family, including his wife, children, and even enslaved individuals. Roman families emphasized duty, tradition, and respect for elders, with ancestral lineage playing a crucial role in societal reputation. Women, while largely confined to domestic roles, could exert influence within the household and, in some cases, in business affairs. Marriage alliances were also instrumental in forging political and social ties, reinforcing the interconnected nature of Roman society.
Beyond the family, Roman society was stratified into distinct classes, each with its own privileges and restrictions. At the top were the patricians, an elite group of aristocratic families who traditionally held political power. Their wealth and influence allowed them to dominate the Senate and other governing bodies. Below them were the plebeians, a broad class of commoners that included farmers, artisans, and merchants. Although they had fewer political rights in the early Republic, the plebeians gradually gained influence through social and political struggles, such as the Conflict of the Orders. The lowest tier of society consisted of enslaved individuals and freedmen. Slaves were often prisoners of war or those born into servitude, playing essential roles in both households and large-scale economic activities. Freedmen, formerly enslaved individuals who had gained their freedom, occupied an intermediate status, often working as skilled laborers or entrepreneurs while still facing social limitations.

The Mississippi Delta is not a place I would have picked to live and if you had asked me a few years ago what I knew about the region, it would have been a puzzle since I knew nothing of its history or culture -- I'd never even heard of Emmett Till.

The 'Hood Comes First looks at the increasingly specific emphasis on real neighborhoods and streets in rap music and hip hop culture as an urgent response to the cultural and geographical ghettoization of black urban communities. Examining rap music, along with ancillary hip hop media including radio, music videos, rap press and the cinematic 'hood genre, Murray Forman analyzes hip hop culture's varying articulations of the terms "ghetto," "inner-city," and "the 'hood," and how these spaces, both real and imaginary, are used to define individual and collective identity.Negotiating academic, corporate, and "street" discourses, Forman assesses the dynamics between race, social space and youth. Race, class and national identification are recast and revised within rap's spatial discourse, concluding with the construction of "the 'hood," a social and geographic symbol that has become central to concepts of hip hop authenticity. Additionally, the book analyzes the processes within the music and culture industries through which hip hop has been amplified and disseminated from the 'hood to international audiences.

Best known as the author of Moby-Dick (1851), Herman Melville is one of America's greatest writers. His achievements range from popular novels and experimental fiction to powerful poetry. His works are tragic and funny, impassioned and ironic, obsessed with philosophical seeking and attuned to the details of everyday life. Melville engaged the pressing issues of his day, from economic inequality and the American slavery crisis to the rise of science and the fragility of democracy. He dwelled on timeless questions about loneliness and intimacy, moral and political responsibility, the limits of our knowledge and agency, and the place of human beings within nature and the cosmos.Melville's life was dramatic, and his career improbable. He was born into privilege, fell into poverty as an adolescent, hunted whales and lived with the Tai Pi people of Polynesia, served in the United States Navy, skyrocketed to fame as a novelist, ruined his career by challenging religious, political, sexual, and artistic conventions, reinvented himself as a poet, and died in relative obscurity just as readers began to appreciate his genius. The scope and diversity of Melville's literature reflects an artist of restless ambition. Herman Melville: A Very Short Introduction helps listeners explore the richness of his work.
