The narrative is based on real events during the unification of Spain. Spain, led by Ferdinand the Second and Isabella of Castile, soared to the height of its power. The policy of the cunning king bore rich fruit. The whole country was taken away from the king of Portugal. By deceit the southern fiefdoms were cut off from France. The master of southern Europe and northern Africa he - King Ferdinand, or rather by his hands and the instruction of Isabella, brought out of slumber and made all-powerful "Manu interpida" - the Inquisition. And now this mechanism was bringing into the king's treasury, first one-third, and now more than two-thirds of all the confiscated goods. And henceforth no one, whether grandee, marquis, or prince, could feel safe. Forsaken, beware - they are coming for you! Young Merinda, who did not wish to become Esteban Junior's mistress, was thrown into prison. Esteban the elder - the second man after the king - so wished. The sentence is ready, all that is left is to disfigure the maiden and then burn her at the stake. But something goes wrong. Fernando, an incorruptible knight of the Hospitaller Order, is in charge of the case. An obvious lie, not proof of guilt. All turn against Fernando the Inquisitor. Fernando has no choice but to save the girl at the cost of his career and even his life. He flees from pursuit along with Merinda. The couple is put on the wanted list. Whoever shelters or helps the fugitives ends up behind bars himself. The new inquisitor hires an assassin to find and kill the fugitives without publicity. The former favourite of the King of Spain, the Countess of Alba, writes a letter to his Highness and admits that she bore his daughter in secret. She asks the King for help in finding her daughter who has disappeared. The King entrusts his confidant, the Marquis Diego, with the task. The Marquis finds the trail - the King and Countess´ daughter is none other than Merinda! The King dismisses the false accusation. But the Inquisition's Purgatory flywheel is unwound. Merinda and Fernando are driven into the mountains and their doom is certain. The pair stand on a precipice above a precipice. The crossbowmen have them in their sights. The Marquis gets there in time. He stops the execution. He untwists the chain of false witnesses. This leads him to plot against the king. He writes a letter to the king and sends it with a messenger. On the way the messenger stops for a drink of water and water for his horse. He is killed by an assassin hired by the Inquisition. He reads the letter and sells it to the conspirators. He then sells the information to the Marquis that the conspirators have intercepted the letter. The Marquis learns through his agents that Admiral Esteban and his goons have followed the trail of Merinda and Fernando and wish to kill everyone. The plot is averted. The King accepts a payoff from the repentant accomplices. It turns out the murderer is not dead from the poison, seeking a meeting with the Marquis for revenge. Such a moment arrives. The Marquis is stunned. A lung is punctured. Merinda dismisses the court physicians. She saves the Marquis´ life herself with the help of herbal infusions and extracts of mould. Merynda is slandered by the physicians as a sorceress. The Queen throws the young Countess into prison. The King himself is powerless against the Queen. Merinda´s death is imminent. But then, passing through the cheering crowd of the townspeople, the King is tried to be killed by his old hater. The wound seems trifling. But after twenty-four hours, the king is taken ill and falls into unconsciousness. The queen realises that the court physicians are powerless, and so are the prayers. She decides to enlist Merinda's help. Nothing is more important to the king's daughter than saving her father's life. Two weeks later, the king is back on his feet. The queen is pleased with the king's recovery, but still wants to get rid of Merinda...

The Qing Dynasty, China’s last imperial dynasty, emerged from the northeastern frontier, led by the Manchu people. Before establishing their rule over China, the Manchus were a semi-nomadic group descended from the Jurchens, who had previously ruled northern China under the Jin Dynasty. In the early 17th century, Nurhaci, a formidable leader, laid the foundation for Manchu power by unifying various Jurchen tribes and adopting administrative and military structures inspired by the Ming Dynasty. His successor, Hong Taiji, continued these efforts, formally establishing the Qing Dynasty in 1636. However, the conquest of China was still incomplete, as the Ming Dynasty continued to rule the heartland.
The decline of the Ming Dynasty provided an opportunity for the Qing to assert their dominance. By the early 17th century, the Ming government was weakened by internal corruption, peasant uprisings, and economic distress exacerbated by famine and mismanagement. The most devastating of these rebellions was led by Li Zicheng, a former postal worker turned insurgent, whose forces overran Beijing in 1644. The fall of the Ming capital marked a critical turning point. With the Ming emperor dead and the central government in disarray, a Ming general, Wu Sangui, faced a difficult choice: resist the rebel forces or seek outside aid. He chose the latter, opening the gates of the Great Wall at Shanhai Pass to the advancing Qing army. The Manchus, under the leadership of Prince Dorgon, seized the moment, swiftly capturing Beijing and declaring the establishment of Qing rule.

From a historian, retired fighter pilot, and combat aviation specialist, “the finest book yet written about the air war over Europe during World War II.” (Air & Space, Smithsonian magazine ) As described by award-winning author Jay A. Stout, the 352nd Fighter Group was one of the Eighth Air Force's most successful fighter units and counted history's two top-scoring P-51 aces among its ranks.  This book—the most comprehensive work ever to cover the actions of a single USAAF fighter unit—details the air actions of not only the group's notable aces, but also the rank-and-file fliers who carried the bulk of the load.  It describes the 352nd’s activities from its formation at the close of 1942, its movement to England and its combat operations flying P-47s and P-51s against the Third Reich. Although the book covers the units actions as a whole, it also follows several pilots in detail.  Rich descriptions of tactics and equipment, personal reflections, letters home, amusing anecdotes and, of course, detailed descriptions of air combat.  Not simply an award-winning historian, Stout draws from his own combat experience as a fighter pilot to make these discussions credible, interesting and real.  Winner of the San Diego Book Award for History. “Stout’s crisp, concise writing powers a narrative that highlights a collection of aviators who destroyed more than 700 German aircraft. The book is certain to take its place with other memorable accounts of European combat.” —John F. Wukovits, author of Black Sheep

The book that has been waiting to be written – how Ireland’s housing policy has locked an entire generation out of the housing market and what we should do about it.
Millennials are the first generation in Ireland to be worse off than their parents. Trapped in a game of rental roulette, stuck living at home as adults, and many on the brink of homelessness, the Irish housing crisis has defined the lives of an entire generation – and it is set to continue.
With housing costs in Ireland the highest in the EU, the property ladder has been kicked from under thousands. So how did we get here … and how do we break the cycle?
In Gaffs, housing expert Rory Hearne urges us to think about the people behind the statistics, and shows us that there is a way towards a future where everyone has access to a home.
In Gaffs, Rory Hearne, a renowned expert in sociology and economics, delves into the heart of the Irish housing crisis, exposing the economic disparity and social classes struggle. He presents a compelling argument, backed by top-notch research, about the dire need for a shift in public policy.
