  At a certain stage in your sales process, your prospect realizes they have a need—ideally due to your exceptional selling skills. As you guide them from recognizing this need through analysis and finally to making a decision, what is on their mind? Consciously or subconsciously, buyers are always weighing the balance of performance, image, and price (PIP). These three factors are perceived differently by each individual, and perceptions can shift over time. In the current economy, it’s crucial to recognize that the relationship between these factors is undergoing significant changes. Marketing must adapt products and messages to align with these shifts, while sales teams need to adjust their presentations, ask new questions, and carefully consider the responses they receive. 
    
  So, what are these three principles, and how should they be managed? 
    
  Performance – For consumers, the concept of performance is evolving. Consider a consumer’s most significant purchase—a home. The idea that "bigger is better" is no longer valid. Consumers are less willing to endure long commutes in exchange for a large house. While the size of a family may change, the desire for a larger home has diminished. Business buyers are experiencing a similar shift. Product and service claims will be scrutinized more closely, and investments that don’t offer a quick return will be avoided. If you thought businesses were short-sighted before, expect this trend to intensify. 
    
  Image – Image remains important, but it’s constantly changing. For consumers, image is increasingly about what a product or service represents to them personally. A homebuyer might choose a smaller house closer to work, but they’ll still want it to reflect their lifestyle. Some images may even become anti-conspicuous. Businesses will also adjust their views on image.

  Derrick Bell is perhaps best known for the principled stand he took at Harvard in 1990 when he quit his tenured position on the law-school faculty to protest the school's failure to grant tenure to a black woman. Now a visiting professor at New York Law School, Bell is still deeply interested in issues of race relations and has chosen to explore the subject fictionally in ""Afrolantica Legacies."" In a nutshell, the story goes like this: a mysterious land mass suddenly appears in the Atlantic Ocean, a fabulous island on which only black people can survive. American blacks set sail to the island to begin a new life, only to see it sink again before they can reach the shore. On the return trip to America, the passengers draw up a list of principles called the Afrolantica Legacies, defining how they want to reposition themselves in American society. The book uses a fictional setting to outline some remedies for the problem of race relations between African Americans and white people in our society.

  Revolution and Terror

  This book is a study of the relationship between revolution and terror. Historically many have claimed that revolution inevitably devolves into terror, best reflected in the way in which after coming to power the revolutionary elite turns on itself, and one section of it uses terrorist means to eliminate another section. Graeme Gill argues that in order to understand the relationship between revolution and terror, it is necessary to distinguish between different types of terror. There are three such types: revolutionary terror, in which the aim is to destroy enemies and thereby consolidate the regime; transformational terror, designed to drive the politico-socio-economic transformation of society that is the purpose of the 'great' revolutions; and inverted terror, which is when terror is turned against part of the elite and regime more broadly. The analysis explains how these different types of terror are related to the revolutionary seizure of power, showing that revolutionary and transformational terror are organically connected to revolution while for inverted terror the connection is mediated through the leader. The argument is prosecuted through detailed analysis of the French, Russian, and Chinese revolutions. The study ends by assessing the contemporary salience of the lessons of the great revolutions in the light of the low level of violence in the negotiated revolutions of 1989.
