Sinossi

Augustine’s memoir, “From Altar to Abyss: My Odyssey through Faith, Drugs, and Darkness” is a powerful and inspirational account of his personal struggle and ultimate triumph over adversity. The memoir chronicles Augustine’s transformative journey from a devout Catholic seminarian to the depths of drug abuse and involvement in a cult, and finally, his triumphant return to a life of purpose and faith.

The book offers a raw and unflinching look at Augustine’s early years in the Catholic seminary, where his unwavering faith and passion for service to God were evident. However, as the pages turn, readers are taken on a harrowing descent into the grips of drug (tramadol) abuse, as Augustine found himself struggling with addiction and grappling with the demons of cultism.

Amidst the turmoil, Augustine’s path took a darker turn as he became entangled in a cult, seeking solace in what he believed to be a refuge from his inner turmoil. The book delves into the details of his involvement, shedding light on the manipulation and control that ensnared him, and the impact it had on his life and relationships.

Through Augustine’s poignant narrative, readers witness his eventual awakening and the arduous journey of breaking free from the clutches of addiction and the insidious hold of the cult. His unwavering determination and resilience come to the forefront as he embarks on a path of self-discovery, seeking redemption and a renewed sense of purpose.

“From Altar to Abyss: My Odyssey through Faith, Drugs, and Darkness” is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity for transformation and renewal. Augustine’s story is one of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of faith. His journey serves as a compelling reminder that, no matter how far one may stray from the path, redemption and salvation are attainable through courage, perseverance, and the unwavering grace of God.

12 True Crime Stories of Murder & MayhemBook 8 of the True Crime Case Histories Series (2022)Readers love this series! More than 7,000 Five Star Ratings
True crime books are not like other genres. I like to make certain the reader knows what they’re getting into. Real true crime is not CSI. It’s exponentially more horrible. True crime fans who have been reading these books for years already know this. Even television documentaries will skip over the truly gruesome parts of crime stories. In my books, I don’t skip over the details, no matter how disturbing they may be. My intent is to give the reader a better glimpse into the mind of the killer.
There are twelve stories in this volume of True Crime Case Histories. One particular story in this volume was sent to me by several readers in the Michigan area. The news of a young woman’s savage death in 2018 was front-page news in Michigan, but the rest of the world may not have heard the story yet.
A sampling of the stories includes:
In this volume, you’ll read some stories that take place as recently as a few years ago, while others date back as far as the 1930s. There’s the story of a young Russian immigrant who came to the United States seeking the exciting lifestyle he’d seen on television, only to be stabbed, set on fire, and left to die in the desert by his own friends.
There’s the story of a young woman who was abducted while sunbathing along the Ohio River. A witness across the river saw the abduction in progress and identified the abductor, but after more than twenty-five years, the girl’s mother still searches for answers.
    Plus many more disturbing stories.

A pathbreaking analysis of the relationship between Mandela the myth, and Mandela the historical figure, looking at the way images, stories, and politics have been combined to create the iconic image of Mandela that we know today.

Boehmer explores the long trajectory of Mandela's life, explaining first the historical and political context of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, and then the post-apartheid period of difficult reconciliation, including the shifts and changes in Mandela's reputation since the millennium.

This innovative postcolonial reflection takes on board the more critical revisionist literature on Mandela that has emerged since 2015, looking at responses to his death in 2013, and the 2018 commemorations of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

The first edition set a trend in scholarship on Mandela by reading his character and achievements through the lens of his influences, interests, and leading ideas. The second edition extends this focus with a far-reaching critical look at meanings of reconciliation and Mandela's ethic of reciprocity.

An electric essay collection about Blackness, art, and dreaming of new possibilities in a time of constriction

This collection of innovative, penetrating, and lively essays features swimming pools and poets, road trips and museums, family dinners and celebrity sightings. In a voice that is at once piercing, mournful, and slyly comic, Aisha Sabatini Sloan inhabits several roles: she is an art enthusiast in Los Angeles during a city-wide manhunt; a daughter on a road trip with her father; a professor playing with puppets in the wilds of Vermont; an interloper on a police ride-along in Detroit; a collector of the dreams of scientists at a biostation. As she watches cell phone video recordings of murder and is haunted in her sleep by the news, she reflects on her formative experiences with aesthetic and spiritual discovery, troubling those places where Blackness has been conflated with death.

Sabatini Sloan's lively style is perfectly suited to the way she circles a subject or an idea before cinching it tight. The curiosity that guides each essay, focusing on the period between the 2016 election and the onset of the pandemic, is rooted in the supposition that there is an intrinsic relationship between the way we conceptualize darkness and our collective opportunity for awakening.
