In the peaceful village of Veltimahe, where daily life unfolds without major disruptions, a disquieting shadow looms over the picturesque scene. At the heart of this tranquil community, the Royal Hotel, a place of gathering and celebration, becomes the setting for a harrowing mystery.

It all begins during a meeting at the Royal Hotel, where Edda, Selma, Aaron, and Frederik gather in an elegantly decorated room. "The Lodger" by Marie Belloc Lowndes is a suspenseful novel written in the early 20th century. The story centers around Robert and Ellen Bunting, a struggling couple living in a modest home in London, whose lives are forever changed when they take in a peculiar lodger named Mr. Sleuth. The Buntings are on the brink of poverty, and while Mr. Sleuth seems like a potential solution to their financial woes, his enigmatic demeanor and deep interest in dark subjects create an unsettling atmosphere.
The novel introduces the Buntings in their dreary living conditions, emphasizing their economic struggles and emotional turmoil. Mr. Bunting is portrayed as a somewhat dull man trying to maintain his dignity despite their impending financial disaster, while Mrs. Bunting grapples with despair over their situation. Their lives take a dramatic turn when a series of brutal murders, attributed to a figure known as "The Avenger," begin to plague the city, coinciding with Mr. Sleuth's arrival and his odd behavior.
The couple's initial relief at securing a lodger sharply contrasts with the growing suspense surrounding Mr. Sleuth and the violent events occurring outside their home. This creates an atmosphere of intrigue and tension as they navigate their precarious circumstances.

Expulsed Harvard student and ex-Special Forces operative Joe Brody is getting his life back together, living with his grandmother in Queens and taking what should be a simple job as a bouncer at a strip club where he can spend most of his night reading the classics. The only catch is that his childhood friend Gio Caprisi, now head of New York's Italian Mafia, relies on Joe’s extra-legal expertise when things get particularly nasty on the streets—where, in an agreement between Gio and the rest of the city's biggest crime syndicates, it's understood that Joe is the sheriff for an industry that doesn’t call the cops.

Most recently, New York's criminal underworld has been shaken by the disappearance of its most successful and desirable call girls, vanishing one by one from the brothels where they're employed. As a pattern emerges, what might otherwise appear to be a choice to pursue a new life comes to resemble something more troublesome—the work of a serial kidnapper—and when a woman turns up dead, the hunt for the predator behind it all becomes even more urgent.

To find the killer, Joe will have to plunge into the seediest fringes of Manhattan and its surrounding boroughs, populated with memorable characters that add humor and heart to this fast-paced caper.
