Sinopse

Arthur Schopenhauer's seminal work, "The World as Will and Idea," unfolds a profound philosophical investigation into the nature of reality, presenting an intricate interplay between the concepts of will and representation. Written in a clear yet richly nuanced prose style, Schopenhauer articulates his metaphysical framework, positing that the world we perceive is shaped by our own subjective experiences and underlying desires. By synthesizing elements from Kantian philosophy and Eastern thought, this tri-part treatise delves into aesthetics, ethics, and the human condition, revealing the existential struggle inherent in the pursuit of knowledge and happiness. Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), a pivotal figure in 19th-century philosophy, was deeply influenced by both Western philosophical traditions and Eastern spirituality, particularly Buddhism and Hinduism. His reflections on the irrational forces that govern human behavior, drew upon his own personal struggles and isolation, which he believed resonated deeply with the human experience. The book marks a critical junction in philosophical discourse, ultimately influencing existential thought and later thinkers such as Nietzsche. "The World as Will and Idea" is a compelling exploration for readers seeking to understand the philosophical underpinnings of desire, suffering, and the nature of reality. Schopenhauer's insightful analysis invites readers to contemplate their own existence, making this work an essential read for anyone intrigued by philosophy, psychology, or the intricacies of human life.

Hey, there word nerd. Thank you for getting a copy of “Big & Fancy Words That Might Make you Smarter…er: A Vocabulary Builder for the Lexical Deficient Interlocutor Albeit Soon To Be Supercilious Smarty Pants Confabulator” wow… that's a long title. So basically this audiobook has a lot of highfalutin, big shot, 52 cent words that are not used that often in normal conversations, (or are they) once you learn them you will start to hear and see them all the time in books, movies, and when eavesdropping on peoples conversations. This audiobook comes complete with 366 words, for every day of the year (plus one extra word for leap year ) its word type, its definitions, and a funny example sentence that hopefully gives you a little chuckle and helps you to remember that particular word more easily. These words are a great way to build up your vocabulary, study for the SATs, gain skills for word games and crossword puzzles or just be the pompous know-it-all at the pub, (I mean the well-read and articulate conversationalist at a dinner party). Whatever your wish to have a larger knowledge of words is, this is a good place to start; so put on those headphones, throw in the 8 track, cassette, cd, or whatever listening device the kids use these days, and listen to this audiobook in your car, on your cell phone while at work when the boss is not looking, while cleaning the house, or before you go to bed at night, and in time, you too, might just become one of the great dialogists. What’s that? A doctor, a scientist?  Nope, but you will find out soon enough after you hit play. So happy listening and I hope you gain a plenitude of verbal cognizance and that you don’t take umbrage with this recording and start pontificating which leads to being allocated to the nearest hoosegow.

    New York, Summer of 1965.

One hot summer, two young children disappeared from their first-floor apartment in the Kew Gardens neighborhood of Queens, New York. Their mother, Alice Crimmins, reported them missing to the police. Later that day, the body of four-year-old Missy was found in a vacant lot, showing signs of having been strangled. The body of five-year-old Eddie, Jr., was found several days later.

Police were immediately suspicious of the mother. Recently divorced, with teased red hair and heavy makeup, Alice Crimmins did not fit the maternal ideal held by the predominantly Catholic police detectives on the case. Her every action was scrutinized: Was she behaving like a grief-stricken mother or like a coldhearted killer? After three years of police surveillance, Alice was charged with the murder of her children in 1968 in a highly publicized trial. Ultimately found guilty of manslaughter, Alice spent a decade in prison before being released on parole in 1977.

But was she truly guilty, or just the victim of police bias and misogynistic judgment? Journalist Anaïs Renevier revisits the case, exploring one of the most famous and divisive trials in recent American history.
