David Innes is a young man who has just inherited a large mining company. An eccentric inventor, Abner Perry, convinces Innes to underwrite a project to build an "iron mole," claiming it will make them both wealthy. The mechanical beast works well—actually too well. On the maiden voyage, instead of digging for a few minutes and returning, they plunge straight through the earth's crust into the "inner world" of Pellucidar. This world resembles Earth but is a horizonless, primeval tropical landscape where the sun neither sets nor rises, and it is populated by "Sagoth" gorilla men, wild human slaves, and the ruling hypnotic, reptilian "Mahors."
Upon arriving at this strange world, the men are immediately captured and enslaved. But soon Perry learns to read the language of the Mahors and discovers a secret way to turn the tables! True to Burroughs form, this nonstop fantasy thriller weaves together savage islanders, pterodactyls, telepathy, and, of course, romance.

Just our luck! Gus Lafee finished wiping his hands and sullenly threw the towel upon the rocks. His attitude was one of deep dejection. The light seemed gone out of the day and the glory from the golden sun. Even the keen mountain air was devoid of relish, and the early morning no longer yielded its customary zest. "Just our luck!" Gus repeated, this time avowedly for the edification of another young fellow who was busily engaged in sousing his head in the water of the lake. "What are you grumbling about, anyway?" Hazard Van Dorn lifted a soap-rimmed face questioningly. His eyes were shut. "What's our luck?" "Look there!" Gus threw a moody glance skyward. "Some duffer's got ahead of us. We've been scooped, that's all!"

Robert Michael Ballantyne was one of the most popular adventure story writers during Victoria's reign. He strongly believed that boys should grow up taking risks, and his hero, Martin Rattler, certainly has a thrilling time in this tale.Aunt Dorothy Grumbit thinks him a very bad boy, but Martin possesses all the manly virtues that one expects from a Ballantyne hero, and the story has all the traditional elements of a rollicking yarn: jolly jack tars, pirates, shipwreck, travel up the Amazon, diamond mines and capture by savage tribes.Public Domain (P)2012 Assembled Stories
