Sinopse

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Poverty in London during the splendorous Victorian Era

Originally published in 1896, “A Child of the Jago” is a novel by English author Arthur Morrison, a bestseller in its time.

“A Child of the Jago” tells the story of Dick Perrot, born and bred in the Jago; but it is also a brilliant portrait of the community. The Jago is a London slum where crime and violence are the only way of life, and from which there is no escape for the inhabitants.

Only the characters themselves are fictional: Morrison's descriptions of the fearful physical conditions are based directly on what he saw. He conjures up an extraordinarily vivid picture of a world which, even as he wrote, was about to vanish in one of the first of the slum clearance schemes. Actually, the Old Jago was a fictionalisation of the Old Nichol, a slum located between Shoreditch High Street and Bethnal Green Road in the East End of London.

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Volume 8:
Throughout many years, Dr. John H. Watson accompanied his friend and companion Sherlock Holmes in solving countless mysteries and crimes. Beginning in the 1880s and into the 20th century, Holmes consistently held his status as the world’s most brilliant and successful detective. His accomplishments were painstakingly chronicled by Watson in notes that relate the adventures of Sherlock Holmes. Many of his accounts have been published and are well-known to a broad readership.
There were times, however, when Watson would refrain from publishing his writings during his lifetime. He would do so for various reasons: At times, he would find himself forced to keep actual events and background information secret for moral, criminal, or financial reasons. Other times, he would want to either avoid potential political, legal, or social scandals or even damage to his own—or Holmes’s—reputation. Some of Watson’s accounts, however, were simply not published at the time because he was occupied with more important or urgent matters.
The New Adventures brings to the public for the very first time some of Watson’s accounts of Sherlock Holmes cases previously kept under lock and key.

For centuries, Thistlewood Manor has stood as home to the Montagu family, a beacon to British aristocracy in rural England. But it’s 1928, and in this new age of women’s rights, Eliza Montagu, 27, a free spirit, has turned her back on her family to live an artist’s life in London.

Yet after Eliza is summoned home, she decides to stay (for now) to help her father run the ailing family business. The presence of her childhood best friend, Oliver, also gives her a reason to stay, as she wonders if their unfulfilled romance might ever come to fruition.

It’s summertime, and amidst a backdrop of cricket matches, Eliza finds a once in a lifetime opportunity to expand her family’s legacy when a neighboring estate to Thistlewood Manor hits the market at a rock bottom price.

While her famous employer is happily back home at Mallowan Hall, wrestling with her Belgian detective's dilemma on board the Orient Express, Phyllida Bright is finding her local renown as a sleuth has put her in high demand. A distraught Vera Rollingbroke suspects her husband of infidelity and has invited Phyllida to a dinner party to observe his behavior, particularly in regard to one Genevra Blastwick. What she does observe at the party is that Genevra craves attention, in contrast to her shy sister Ethel. Genevra introduces a game called Two Truths and a Lie, and one of her questionable statements is that she once witnessed a murder. At this bold claim, the guests react with disbelief and pepper her with questions. Genevra remains cagey, withholding details, but insists this is not her lie.The next morning Phyllida learns poor Ethel was purposely run down by a motorcar the previous night while inexplicably walking home alone from the party. She fears Genevra may have been the target, which means someone at the party is a killer—twice over. A chilling thought. With Genevra in potential danger—and Inspector Cork proceeding ponderously as usual—Phyllida takes it upon herself to unmask the killer.
