Summary

High in Jungle Treetops Swings Young Bentley―His Human Brain Imprisoned in a Mighty Ape

Arthur J. Burks was born on September 13th, 1898 in Waterville, Washington.
He served in the United States Marine Corps in World War I.
Arthur married Blanche Fidelia Lane on March 23rd, 1918 in Sacramento, California and was the father of four children.
In 1920 he began his writing career after being stationed in the Caribbean. Inspired by native voodoo rituals he used his experience to write stories of the supernatural that he then sold to the magazine Weird Tales.
In 1928 he resigned from the Marine Corps and began writing full-time. He quickly became one of the "million-word-a-year" men in the pulps by virtue of his prodigious output. Over his career he wrote some 800 stories for the pulp magazines. A favourite trick was being able to take any household object that someone would suggest and to instantly create a plot based upon it.
Burks wrote primarily on aviation, detective, adventure and weird menace. On several occasions these became entire series such as with the Kid Friel boxing stories in Gangster Stories, and the Dorus Noel undercover-detective stories for All Detective Magazine, set in Manhattan's Chinatown.
However the constant need to produce so much fiction caused him to throttle back by the late-1930s. With the United States entering the Second World War he returned to active duty, eventually retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
In 1948 Burks moved to Paradise in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania where he continued to write.
Throughout the '60s, he wrote many works on metaphysics and the paranormal. In his later years, he lectured on paranormal activities.
Arthur J. Burks died on May 13th, 1974.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

Leo Tolstoy (1828 – 1910) is one of the most famous Russian writers and thinkers and is considered one of the greatest writers in the world, he was acknowledged the head of the Russian literature during his lifetime. His work marked a new stage of the development of the Russian and world’s realism and created a bridge between the classic novel of the XIX century and the literature of the XX century. The story "Hatred is Sweet, But God is Strong" is a parable of a kind master and a slave of his who tried to anger him and show to other slaves, that he was just like any other master. However is appears to be a struggle between not two humans, but the ultimate forces. This is a story that everyone will find edifying, but in his or her own way.A SmartTouch Media production.

Nineteen brilliant stories from the satirical master about talking cats, fearsome ferrets, and absurd humans . . . At a country house party, Cornelius Appin announces that he has discovered a method by which animals can be taught to speak. His latest pupil is none other than Tobermory, the ginger cat belonging to his hosts, Sir Wilfred and Lady Blemley. As the guests express astonishment and incredulity, Sir Wilfred goes off to find Tobermory, who is lounging in the smoking room waiting for his tea. What Appin claims is true, and Tobermory demonstrates his remarkable talents—with unanticipated results. With this and other witty, imaginative, and insightful stories, this collection is a delight that captures the foibles of society in Edwardian England, yet remains entertainingly timeless in its portraits of human (and animal) nature.
