  An author’s talents may seem obvious and indisputable as they move words and ideas into gathered phrases and stories.  
  But where do these ideas and stories come from?  A lonely thought that suddenly gathers form?  An inspiration from a Muse?  A suggestion from an everyday event? 
  Perhaps in the case of their darker, more malevolent stories, other forces are at work.  They help to nourish single words into sentences and paragraphs that ease themselves from the shadows and are suddenly upon us in twisted revelation that may thrill, may disturb, but will always engage and help us explore the edge of darkness where some of the very best literature patiently lurks …. waiting …. for the likes of me and you.

  That moment in time will come. It will be the end of this life and one of three things will happen.  Nothing, Heaven or Hell.   Somehow, for most people, the odds don’t look so good on laying back in Paradise for eternity.  And we may be there alone or with people we never really liked or―or most probably, we don’t really have any coherent idea at all.  Just the fear that the end is nigh. 
   
  Our literary friends including Edgar Allan Poe, Leo Tolstoy, Mary Shelley and others probably mean well but their job here is to tackle fear head on and we may well end up not getting the answer we first thought of.

  Mary Frances Butts was born on 13th December 1890 in Poole, Dorset. 
   
  Her early years were spent at Salterns, an 18th-century house overlooking Poole Harbour.  Sadly in 1905 her father died, and she was sent for boarding at St Leonard's school for girls in St Andrews. 
  Her mother remarried and, from 1909, Mary studied at Westfield College in London, and here, first became aware of her bisexual feelings.  She was sent down for organising a trip to Epsom races and only completed her degree in 1914 when she graduated from the London School of Economics.  By then Mary had become an admirer of the occultist Aleister Crowley and she was given a co-authorship credit on his ‘Magick (Book 4)’. 
   
  In 1916, she began the diary which would now detail her future life and be a constant reference point for her observations and her absorbing experiences. 
   
  During World War I, she was doing social work for the London County Council in Hackney Wick, and involved in a lesbian relationship.  Life changed after meeting the modernist poet, John Rodker and they married in 1918. 
   
  In 1921 she spent 3 months at Aleister Crowley's Abbey of Thelema in Sicily; she found the practices dreadful and also acquired a drug habit.  Mary now spent time writing in Dorset, including her celebrated book of short stories ‘Speed the Plough’ which saw fully develop her unique Modernist prose style. 
   
  Europe now beckoned and several years were spent in Paris befriending many artists and writing further extraordinary stories.   
   
  She was continually sought after by literary magazines and also published several short story collections as books. Although a Modernist writer she worked in other genres but is essentially only known for her short stories.  Mary was deeply committed to nature conservation and wrote several pamphlets attacking the growing pollution of the countryside. 
   
  In 1927, she divorced and the following year her novel ‘Armed with Madness’ was published.  A further marriage followed in 1930 and time was spent attempting to settle in London and Newcastle before setting up home on the western tip of Cornwall.  By 1934 the marriage had failed. 
   
  Mary Butts died on 5th March 1937, at the West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance, after an operation for a perforated gastric ulcer. She was 46. 
   
  Once more Butts reveals her wonderful talents.  Here, two sisters plan a prank on their neighbour.  But when real life imitates and amplifies their idea unease and dread come to the fore.

  "The Nameless City" is a horror story written by American writer H. P. Lovecraft in January 1921 and first published in the November 1921 issue of the amateur press journal The Wolverine. It is often considered the first Cthulhu Mythos story. The Nameless City of the story's title is an ancient ruin located somewhere in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula, and is older than any human civilization. In ancient times, the Nameless City was built and inhabited by an unnamed race of reptiles with a body shaped like a cross between a crocodile and a seal with a strange head common to neither, involving a protruding forehead, horns, lack of a nose, and an alligator-like jaw. These beings moved by crawling; thus, the architecture of the city has very low ceilings and some places are too low for a human being to stand upright. Their city was originally coastal, but, when the seas receded, it was left in the depths of a desert. This resulted in the decline and eventual ruin of the city.

They think they’re each other’s worst enemies, but they’re wrong. Very wrong. There is a creature of endless hunger waiting in the shadows, and it’s ready to feed. 
   
  Good guys? Bad guys? None of it matters tonight.

  They made it out of the rubble alive. Mostly. The survivors had lost everything in the disaster. All of it was destroyed in one horrific blink of an eye. They were going to have to regroup somewhere and heal, gather more supplies. Cheyenne Mountain, and the answers it would hopefully bring, could wait a little longer. Sten's place represented security and promised them a place to recoup some of their losses, but getting there could cost them their lives. Especially since danger was multiplying at every turn. 
   
   
   
  At least they were still together . . . for now. 
   
   
   
  When Kate went to her favorite coffee shop to finish up a work project, she hadn't expected the world to end. 
   
   
   
  She hadn't expected to commit felonies left and right. 
   
   
   
  She hadn't expected to lose her entire family. 
   
   
   
  She hadn't expected Storm. 
   
   
   
  Joining up with some of the soldiers seemed like the best option to accomplish her personal mission. Nashville was falling and needed their support, and she could tag along and help raise the body count. She wished she knew if the sacrifices she had made would be worth it in the end.
