Sinopse

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930. The stories cover a period from around 1878 up to 1903, with a final case in 1914.

    Series Entry: 123
    Author: Robert W. Chambers
    Narrator: Jonathan Dunne
    Original Publication: 1895

    Description:
In the Court of the Dragon is a haunting tale of inexorable pursuit and metaphysical dread drawn from The King in Yellow.
The story follows a troubled church organist who becomes convinced that a sinister churchwarden — a gaunt, black-robed figure with an air of dreadful authority — is hunting him. What begins as a vague unease during a church service swells into a waking nightmare, as the man feels himself marked, summoned, and relentlessly pursued. The boundaries between sanctuary and snare, between sacred ritual and profane destiny, begin to collapse.
Chambers crafts a suffocating atmosphere of inevitability. The horror does not rush; it advances with ceremonial slowness, like the tolling of a funeral bell. The organ’s music becomes a summons, the church transforms into a labyrinth of judgment, and the looming figure of the Dragon embodies something far older and more terrible than mere madness.
Unlike tales that rely on overt violence, In the Court of the Dragon unsettles through fatalism and spiritual claustrophobia. The terror lies in being chosen — in sensing that one’s name has been entered into some dreadful ledger, and that the machinery of fate has already begun to turn.
Narrated by Amazon bestselling horror author Jonathan Dunne, this performance captures the story’s mounting paranoia, dreamlike unreality, and inexorable descent into cosmic judgment — bringing Chambers’ strange and lingering vision to chilling life.

Katherine O'Flaherty was born on the 8th February 1850 in St Louis, Missouri to parents of French and Irish descent.
At age 5, she was sent to the Sacred Heart Academy and, apart from a 2 year period at home when her father died, remained there until graduating in 1868. Whilst there she began writing and became an avid reader of almost anything that crossed her path.
Kate married Oscar Chopin in 1870 and the couple moved to New Orleans, and later to the rural setting of Cloutierville, Louisiana to raise their 6 children.
In 1882 her husband died leaving her in a deep trench of debt. Despite her best efforts to turn the businesses around they were sold, and she moved the family back to St Louis and the financial help of her mother. Sadly, her mother died within the year. Kate, now struggling with depression, pushed herself to write and gained a local reputation as a writer of short stories that captured the local color and vibrancy of her surroundings.
By the early 1890’s her short stories were published nationally. With this widespread audience also came negative reviews, controversy, and cries of immorality as themes such as interracial relationships, the rights of women and other burning issues of the day were written about.
Despite the criticism, which unnerved her, she continued to write though in the main her works, around 100 short stories and two novels, were not attributed with any literary worth.
Kate Chopin died from a brain haemorrhage in St Louis Missouri on the 22nd of August 1904. She was 54.
For much of the 20th Century her work was forgotten and out of print. It was only in early 1970’s, with the rise of feminism and the call for a more just society that she was given the status her works had long described and shone a literary light at. She is now safely revered as one of America’s great authors.

William Butler Yeats was born in Sandymount in County Dublin, Ireland on 13th June 1865.
His early years moved between Ireland and England. By his mid-teens he was writing but those works were described as ‘entirely Un-Irish’. With Ernest Rhys he founded the Rhymers Club. Based at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese in Fleet Street it’s best described as a drinking club for performing poets. Yeats later cited them as ‘The Tragic Generation’. By now Yeats was writing and publishing poetry and stories that were profoundly based in Irish folklore.
Yeats is perhaps best described as Ireland’s national poet in addition to being one of the major twentieth-century literary figures of the English tongue. He represents the ‘Romantic poet of modernism,’ with an extraordinary style created from the outward emphasis on the expression of emotions and the extensive use of symbolism, imagery and allusions.
In 1923 his fame was brought to an even wider audience when he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
His personal life was driven by his many relationships in love and by his great interest in oriental mysticism and occultism. Yeats also wrote prose and drama and, as an ardent Nationalist, established himself as a spokesman of the Irish cause and served as an Irish senator for two terms.
W B Yeats died at the Hôtel Idéal Séjour, in Menton, France, on 28th January 1939. He was 73.
