Sinopse

In "A Study in Scarlet," Arthur Conan Doyle introduces readers to the brilliant detective Sherlock Holmes and his steadfast companion Dr. John Watson. This foundational novel of the detective genre is characterized by its intricate narrative structure, blending first-person storytelling with a rich third-person historical account. Set against the backdrop of Victorian England, Doyle employs vivid descriptions and meticulous attention to detail, capturing the essence of crime and mystery. The work is divided into two parts: the first introducing the baffling murder case, while the second unravels the haunting backstory of revenge and spiritualism, reflecting the era's fascination with scientific rationale and moral complexities. Arthur Conan Doyle, a physician by training, drew inspiration from his medical background and the burgeoning field of forensic science, which equipped him with a keen understanding of the human mind and investigative logic. His encounter with the real-life figure Dr. Joseph Bell, who used observation and deduction to diagnose patients, was paramount in shaping the character of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle's own interest in spiritualism and the supernatural also weaves through the narrative, creating a compelling intersection of fact and fiction. This novel is essential reading for enthusiasts of detective fiction and those seeking to understand the origins of one of literature's most enduring characters. Doyle's masterful storytelling invites readers into a world of intrigue and deduction, making it a timeless exploration of human nature and morality. Delve into "A Study in Scarlet" to experience the excitement of the case that launched Sherlock Holmes into literary immortality.

A novel with incredible prescience from late 1800's about the perpetual corruption of the elites and out of control oppression of the working class, set in late 80's of our time. Only if the steam could have been released before the revolution! And oh, the dangers of massive revolution. He seemed to predict computer screens and AI news, advanced weaponry, globalization, Capitalism, the collapse of Democracy, the insane corruption at al levels, and the split in society between the halves and the have nots.
Some great monologues in the struggle for power and to wrangle the will of the people. It's uncanny how important this message is now in the 2020's, and I won't spoil the ending about what the true possibilities are for humanity. We are also treated to a couple traditional romantic love stories along the way.

Meet Tommy Bruce - he's washed-up already, marooned in a ramshackle hotel inherited from dead parents in the armpit of Perthshire, that's just too far off the main tourist trail to be viable. He's too young to be middle-aged, but too old to be what you could call young (and too lazy to care about it, really). Saddled with debt, grotty premises that are falling down around him and a crippling loneliness, Tommy is slowly but determinedly drinking himself and his business out of existence. Until one day into the lounge-bar, and out of the blue, walks Fiona McLean. And before long she's moved behind the bar, into the hotel and (remarkably) into Tommy's bed. Fiona blows into Tommy's life and through the hotel, and with the light she brings, Tommy's fortunes might just be turning around; but in her wake has also slipped in darkness - names and faces from the past who mean Tommy no goodwill at all, criminal forces that threaten to ruin him, the hotel and what little happiness he's managed, haplessly, to cobble together.

When a bomb levels an entire block in a gentrifying Philadelphia neighborhood, killing dozens of people days before Christmas, all signs point to terrorism. But who did it? And why? Veteran Philadelphia Police Detective Frank Benson and Sergeant Ophelia Brown-Thurman are long on questions and short on answers.
Meanwhile, the high-profile racketeering trial of a crooked union official begins. It is a case in which Benson, despite his best efforts, is selected to serve on the jury—and which turns out to have disturbing links to the deadly bombing.
Benson and Brown-Thurman’s investigation leads them into the underground snake pit of right-wing extremists still raging over the outcome of the 2020 election, and eager to lash out. As they race to determine a motive and unmask the culprit, another, deadlier conspiracy brews—one that puts the new President-elect in the crosshairs.
In this third installment of the Frank Benson and Ophelia Brown-Thurman mystery series, author and Philly native Neal Goldstein weaves a riveting tale of malice and mayhem around real-life events. It’s a story about a divided America where heroic public servants will do whatever it takes to defend the city, and the nation, that they love.
