Sinopse

In "American Indian Freemasonry," Arthur C. Parker provides an incisive exploration of the intersections between Native American culture and the Masonic tradition, a theme that remains largely under-examined in both Freemasonry and Indigenous studies. The book weaves together historical context, personal narratives, and social analysis, using a mix of ethnographic detail and introspective prose that mirrors the dual heritage of its subjects. Through careful examinations of rituals, symbols, and community networks, Parker elucidates how Freemasonry has adapted to express and honor Indigenous identities while also critiquing aspects of mainstream Masonic practices. Arthur C. Parker, a prominent Seneca historian and archaeologist, drew upon his personal experiences and extensive academic training to address this topic. His passion for preserving Native American history and culture, along with his own engagement with Freemasonry, provided him with unique insights that inform his analysis. Parker's multifaceted background allows him to bridge the gap between Indigenous traditions and Western philosophies, making his work especially resonant for both communities. This book is an essential read for scholars of both Freemasonry and Native American studies, offering a nuanced view that challenges stereotypes and underscores the rich tapestry of American cultural history. It will also captivate casual readers interested in the complexities of identity and community within the framework of Western traditions.

Hard Aground brings together three intertwined stories documenting the US Navy's strategic and matériel evolution from the end of Civil War through the First World War.

The first story focuses on the reconstruction of the US Navy following the swift and near-total dismantling of the Union Navy infrastructure after the Civil War. Jampoler argues that the federal government discovered that the fleet requested by the navy, and paid for by Congress, was the wrong fleet.

The second story relates the short, tragic life of the USS Tennessee. The USS Tennessee was ordered on two unusual missions in the early months of the First World War, long before the United States formally entered the war. These little-known missions and the ship's shocking destruction in a storm surge in the Caribbean serve as the centerpiece of the story.

Jampoler rounds out this fascinating account with the story of how the USS Tennessee's destruction prompted fierce deliberations about the US Navy's operations and chains of command for the remainder of the First World War and the high-level political wrangling inside the Department of the Navy immediately after the war.

Surely enough has been written about F. Scott Fitzgerald, the man who coined "the Jazz Age" and symbolized the Roaring Twenties, whose very name conjures up a meteoric rise and an equally spectacular fall? But the better question might be, why has so much ink been spent on a writer who completed only four novels, who fell from grace in the 1930s only to be resurrected twenty years later? The answer, according to the cultural critic Arthur Krystal, "is the problem that is Fitzgerald."

Drawn to the glitter of fame but aspiring to the empyrean heights of Joseph Conrad and James Joyce, Fitzgerald careened from the perfection of The Great Gatsby to the hack world of Hollywood screenwriting, penning stories that were either brilliant distillations of the age or superficial works of fiction. Like America itself, Fitzgerald was a work in progress, a self-created and conflicted human being striving for ideals that neither he nor the nation could ever live up to.

In this unusual biography Krystal gives us not only the peripatetic and turbulent life of a cultural icon but also the intellectual sweep of a period in history that created our modern America. Some Unfinished Chaos delivers a nuanced portrait of a man whose various sides embodied the trends, passions, and pursuits of the imperfect society that both glorified and dismissed him.

An Evil Shadow Falls'By Wise Guidance, you can wage your war'The Sam Holloway TrilogyAn Evil Shadow Falls is the final part of the Sam Holloway trilogy, in which the former Special Forces officer and her team of warrior contractors face their most dangerous mission yet, in a wild adventure that starts in London and ends in armed intervention and death on the high seas. A nuclear warhead had gone missing and a terrorist mastermind, inspired by the events of 9/11 and a fanatical vision of Armageddon is planning a mass-casualty attack against the West that can only be measured in the metrics of madness. The Security and Intelligence agencies must make sense of a complicated jigsaw puzzle of clues, technical intercepts, source reports, and inputs from foreign intelligence services if they are to prevent Ground Zero 2. In a race against time, Sam's team, now including an unlikely ally, a refugee from London's postcode drug wars, and an MI5 agent within ISIS must find the deadly device before it detonates. The last book in the Samantha Holloway series starts in London, has its back story in the wild mountains of Afghanistan, and ends on a stormy night in the mid-Atlantic, with the Special Boat Service on standby and ready to deploy from a Royal Navy warship in support of the Spartan team. But even the best-laid plans rarely survive contact with the enemy, and the team must draw on all their combined skills and courage if they are to thwart a murderous plot that carries with it a horrifying echo of an all-too-possible future reality.***** Brilliant, been there, done that, Delaney nails the authenticity once again...'***** An audible treat that had me hooked to the end...'***** The action races off the page!***** Wow!! What a cracking story!***** This is essentially a ‘rattling good yarn’, a highly topical good vs evil adventure story, fast-paced and packed with incident.

    Heavyweight - Black Boxers and...

In Heavyweight, Jordana Moore Saggese examines images of Black heavyweight boxers to map the visual terrain of racist ideology in the United States, paying particular attention to the intersecting discourses of Blackness, masculinity, and sport. Looking closely at the "shadow archive" of portrayals across fine art, vernacular imagery, and public media at the turn of the twentieth century, she demonstrates how the images of boxers reveal the racist stereotypes implicit in them, many of which continue to structure ideas of Black men today. With a focus on both anonymous fighters and notorious champions, including Jack Johnson, Saggese contends that popular images of these men provided white spectators a way to render themselves experts on Blackness and Black masculinity. These images became the blueprint for white conceptions of the Black male body—existing between fear and fantasy, simultaneously an object of desire and an instrument of violence. Reframing boxing as yet another way whiteness establishes the violent mythology of its supremacy, Saggese highlights the role of imagery in normalizing a culture of anti-Blackness.
