Sinopse

In the tranquil and enigmatic town of Saintpotden, a dark legacy insinuated itself amidst the shadows of everyday routine. It all began with what seemed like an innocent family heirloom: a porcelain doll, ancient and delicate, found its new home within Friedrich's family.

But as weeks slipped by and clocks marked the passage of time, the dark secrets of this doll chillingly revealed themselves. Its inert face lay as a silent witness to a subtle malevolence slowly emerging.

The first signs of its malevolent power manifested when the doll shifted its position in the dimness of the room, a subtle yet unsettling metamorphosis. The changes were barely perceptible at first, but with time, they became as noticeable as they were disturbing.

A laughter emanating from its sealed lips, increasingly sinister with each repetition, echoed through the corners of the house, suffocating the peace that once reigned in that home. Unexplainable incidents plagued the tranquil family life, hinting at a terror that extended beyond the borders of human understanding.

As the doll unleashed its malevolent influence, nights in Saintpotden were tainted by a series of murders, a dark omen that plunged the town into a cloak of fear and bewilderment.

In this seemingly serene haven, hints of unsettling neighbors emerged. Kurt, Friedrich's enigmatic neighbor, displayed disturbing behaviors, casting suspicions on the connection between his strange conduct and the curse looming over the doll.

The conclusion loomed amidst sacrifice, forging a path to peace at an unfathomable cost. The culmination of this battle against the bewitched doll would unfold, leaving the people of Saintpotden with heavy hearts and a peace obtained at an unimaginable price.

Special Agent Vera Taggart walked away from a promising career as an artist to join the FBI, and she impresses her new colleagues with her eerie ability to divine conclusions from the grisliest crime scenes. Taggart’s first assignment is a decades-old cold case centered on a cult of suicide bombers known as the Sons of Elijah who believe they’ve been reborn hundreds of times. It seems like a low-risk assignment until a bomb tears apart a crowded restaurant. The Sons of Elijah have returned—and now it’s up to Taggart to stop their modern-day reign of terror. Taggart’s investigation begins with Dr. Seth Jacobson, a renowned psychiatrist who claims to help people remember past lives through hypnotherapy. Jacobson had treated two of the Sons of Elijah’s founders before they’d gone on to commit a series of horrific murders. Desperate to understand how these ordinary patients could have taken such a violent path, Taggart agrees to undergo similar treatment with Jacobson. Through her hypnosis sessions, Taggart comes to suspect the Sons of Elijah are targeting a high-tech government laboratory that could expose the group’s greatest secret with a controversial experiment. To save millions of innocent lives, she must come to grips with the shocking truth about the cult and her own puzzling role in its timeless mission. The fate of humanity rests on her ability to determine which threats are real and which exist only in her mind—and to decide whose side she’s really fighting for.

“A beautiful, dream-like, unsettling narrative in which every word, like a small jewel, feels carefully chosen, considered and placed. Rarely do debut novels come as assured and impressive as this one.” —Sarah Waters, New York Times bestselling author of The Paying Guests
Elegant, sinister and psychologically complex, After Me Comes the Flood is the haunting debut novel by the bestselling author of The Essex Serpent and Melmoth.
One hot summer’s day, John Cole decides to shut his bookshop early, and possibly forever, and drives out of London to see his brother. When his car breaks down on an isolated road, he goes looking for help and finds a dilapidated house. As he approaches, a laughing woman he’s never seen before walks out, addresses him by name and explains she’s been waiting for him. Entering the home, John discovers an enigmatic clan of residents all of whom seem to know who he is, and also claim they have been awaiting him arrival. They seem to be waiting for something else, too—something final…
Written before Sarah Perry’s ascension to an internationally bestselling author, After Me Comes the Flood is a spectacular novel of obsession, conviction and providence.

HOLY INNOCENT: I've seen you with the others, your little machine capturing their words, and now, it seems, you have come to me. They say you're a professor and must, therefore, despite your youth, be wise, so I suppose I should do my best to lay aside my misgivings and put my trust in you.

An unquenchable fire and sinister laughter.
