Sinopsis

Arrian's "The Anabasis of Alexander," a seminal historical narrative, chronicles the remarkable military campaigns of Alexander the Great, interweaving detailed accounts of battles, strategies, and the geography of the ancient world. Written in the 2nd century AD, this text is notable for its meticulous style and reliance on primary sources, including the accounts of Alexander's contemporaries, which lends authenticity and depth to Arrian's portrayal of the legendary conqueror. The work stands as a cornerstone of historiography, reflecting the virtues of the Hellenistic period while simultaneously serving as a critical analysis of leadership and ambition. Arrian, a Greek historian and philosopher, was profoundly influenced by the legacy of Alexander and his military innovations. His background as a student of the philosopher Epictetus and his own experiences as a military commander enriched his understanding of both the philosophical implications of leadership and the practical realities of warfare. Such insights allow him to present not only a historical account but also a profound examination of Alexander's character and the zeitgeist of his time. This masterfully crafted narrative appeals to historians, students of classical literature, and enthusiasts of military history alike. Engaging and richly detailed, "The Anabasis of Alexander" not only captures the grandeur of Alexander's conquests but also serves as an enduring reflection on the complexities of power, legacy, and the human spirit.

    Watergate & the Teapot Dome...

The early 20th century was a time of sudden growth for the young American automobile industry, and of a military beginning to extend its reach around the world. In what would become largely a jurisdictional dispute over Western natural resources, the unbridled oil industry of the new century collided with the United States military and the Department of the Interior, set against the dominance of a corruption-riddled presidential administration. For the first time in American history, in a test between entrepreneurism and government management, a high-ranking cabinet official was convicted of corruption and sent to prison in the aftermath, along with his co-conspirators. Although never directly implicated in the row over Teapot Dome and its sister fields, the administration of Republican Warren G. Harding, elected in November of 1921, set the scandal in motion by transferring control of the Navy’s oil fields to the Department of Interior, at the Secretary of the Interior’s incessant urging.
Increasingly and mistakenly viewed as a single scandal within the United States government, what is commonly referred to as the Watergate scandal serves as an overarching term for a series of scandals beginning in 1971 and extending through 1974, although more than any other, it refers to the specific break-in at the Watergate Hotel and office complex in Washington, D.C. The crisis, originating in a secretive battle between the two major political parties, the Nixon White House’s paranoia, and the ensuing conflict concerning the release of confidential information to the public, induced senior government officials into committing crimes (most notoriously petty burglary) and coverups for the purposes of character assassination and inter-political espionage, and it ultimately resulted in the first and only resignation of a sitting American president.

Confucianism, one of the world’s oldest and most influential philosophies, has deeply shaped Chinese culture, governance, and social structures for over two millennia. Rooted in the teachings of Confucius, a revered teacher and philosopher who lived in ancient China, Confucianism is less a religion than a guiding framework for leading an ethical life, cultivating personal virtues, and fostering harmonious relationships. Its principles emphasize respect for family, reverence for tradition, and a commitment to education and self-betterment—values that resonate universally, even as they are uniquely expressed in East Asian societies.
Confucius himself envisioned a society where individuals behaved with compassion and integrity, rulers governed with wisdom and justice, and families formed the foundation of moral learning. Central concepts such as *ren* (humaneness), *li* (ritual propriety), and *xiao* (filial piety) highlight the importance of empathy, respectful conduct, and devotion to family, which lie at the heart of Confucian teachings. Over centuries, these ideals have expanded to influence countless aspects of life, from governance and social etiquette to education and family dynamics.
As Confucianism has evolved, it has also encountered both support and criticism, adaptations and reinterpretations. In modern times, the philosophy faces new questions: How does Confucianism reconcile with individual rights and equality? What role does it play in an increasingly globalized world? This book aims to explore Confucianism in its depth and breadth, unraveling its rich history, core teachings, and its dynamic role in contemporary society.
For anyone seeking to understand the values and perspectives that have helped shape one of the most enduring societies on earth, Confucianism offers both timeless wisdom and a meaningful framework for personal and social growth.
