Summary

Aristotle delves into the fundamental nature of reality, exploring concepts that go beyond the physical world. He investigates the principles of existence, the nature of substance, and the definition of the "unmoved mover" or first cause. This seminal text seeks to understand being qua being, distinguishing between potentiality and actuality in the structure of the universe. It serves as a foundational inquiry into ontology, shaping the course of Western philosophical thought for centuries.

"Dual Calling: Pulpit and Politics" by Shirley H. Clark powerfully attests to conviction, persistence, and divine intent. From subjective struggles to unpredictable callings, this book indicates how God's hand guides even the most problematic courses. The journey commences with unyielding faith through betrayal and difficulty, underscoring how prayer and trust in God's plan provide strength. The book draws conceptions keenly from scripture to illustrate how faith, like a mustard seed, can develop into a life of purpose. As an educator, Clark shares experiences working with children with special needs, exhibiting how patience, prayer, and trust in God shape a calling to serve. The narrative then evolves into an exceptional metamorphosis—answering both a ministerial and political calling and ascertaining that faith can surpass conventional peripheries. This account analyzes leadership, obedience, and the consonance between faith and governance from the pulpit to the county council. Through every ordeal and accomplishment, it highlights how God's plan flares unexpectedly, reminiscing to embrace purpose with courage and belief.

Michelle Mays was born into an abusive family in the Midwest. As she and her siblings cling to survival, the balance of family ties is weighed against alcoholism, drug abuse, abandonment, and despair. Hope dawns in the form of foster care, only to be deferred by multiple placements and a system not equipped to support the children it's meant to protect.Through powerful vignettes of a life disjointed, Mays's story is a journey of hope that is echoed in the experiences of thousands of children in the court and foster care systems today.Dumpster Doll is brave not because it is unique, but because it unflinchingly shines a light on family turmoil, flaws in judicial systems, and ultimately, the grit and tenacity that thousands of children exhibit each day just to make it through.

“Canadians and politicians have a common responsibility: to learn from the mistakes inherited from a colonialist legacy; and to not repeat the wrongs, corruption, and injustices our people suffered in the hands of government officials, politicians, and their oppressive laws. Reading and learning from Cheated would be a good place to start reconciliation and reparation.” — Ovide Mercredi, former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations

The story of how Laurier Liberals took hold of the Department of Indian Affairs in 1896 and transformed it into a machine for expropriating Indigenous land.

You won’t find the Ocean Man and Pheasant Rump reserves on a map of southeastern Saskatchewan. In 1901, the two Nakoda bands reluctantly surrendered the 70 square miles granted to them under treaty. It’s just one of more than two dozen surrenders aggressively pursued by the Laurier Liberal government over a fifteen-year period. One in five acres was taken from First Nations.

This confiscation was justified on the grounds that prairie bands had too much land and that it would be better used by white settlers. In reality, the surrendered land was largely scooped up by Liberal speculators — including three senior civil servants and a Liberal cabinet minister —and flipped for a tidy profit. None were held to account.

Cheated is a gripping story of single-minded politicians, uncompromising Indian Affairs officials, grasping government appointees, and well-connected Liberal speculators, set against a backdrop of politics, power, patronage, and profit. The Laurier government’s settlement of western Canada can never be looked at the same way again.
