Sinopse

The Clouds by Aristophanes is a sharp and satirical comedy that offers a witty critique of intellectual trends and social attitudes in ancient Athens. First performed in 423 BCE, the play humorously examines the influence of new philosophical ideas and the shifting values of Athenian society, particularly through its parody of education and rhetoric.

The story follows Strepsiades, an indebted and desperate man seeking a way to escape his financial troubles. Hoping to outwit his creditors, he enrolls in a peculiar school known as the "Thinkery," where unconventional teachings promise to turn weak arguments into strong ones. There, he encounters a caricature of the philosopher Socrates, who is portrayed as the head of this absurd institution, suspended between heaven and earth while pondering abstract ideas.

As Strepsiades and later his son become entangled in this world of distorted logic and clever wordplay, the play unfolds into a comedic exploration of morality, responsibility, and the misuse of knowledge. Aristophanes uses exaggerated characters and imaginative scenarios to question whether intellectual sophistication leads to wisdom—or merely provides tools for deception.

Blending humor with biting social commentary, The Clouds reflects concerns about the erosion of traditional values and the consequences of prioritizing cleverness over integrity. Tumbling for Amateurs is a reimagining of James Tayloe Gwathmey’s 1910 book of the same name, published as part of Spalding’s Athletic Library. Bookended with “Propositions” on why tumbling is a skill that everyone should learn and “Extracts from Letters of Support,” each verso poem in this collection pairs with a recto illustration based on drawings from the source text. In the spirit of William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and of Experience, word and image work for each other, creating something more than just an instructional manual.
Tumbling is, well, a metaphor for everything. And we all are, well, amateurs. Experimentation abounds in these poems and manipulated pictures. There are anaphoras, list sonnets, erasures, palimpsests and concrete poems, all working from tumbling’s limited vocabulary and central focus of acrobatics and gymnastics. In this experimentation of form and text is a search for the lyric, for an emotional connection when one isn’t always possible, in bodies, in movement, in desire. “We measure our lives by what our bodies can do.”

Living by Troubled Waters is the third poetry collection by Roy McFarlane – an extraordinary, uncompromising book exploring slavery, colonialism, and the continued tragedies visited upon Black bodies whilst these legacies remain unresolved. In his close examination of the horror of racialised violence, McFarlane examines how the strong currents of the past and present flow side by side. His poems ask us to think about the Black Mediterranean of today as much as we do about the Windrush scandal and the aftershocks of trans-Atlantic slavery, where Black people are still imprisoned, enslaved and drowned as they flee persecution and poverty.
Living by Troubled Waters is innovative, formally experimental and far ranging in scope; erasure & inclusion (to make known) poems interweave and speak to the wider body of the collection. In his use of archival documents as a space for activism and linguistic intervention, McFarlane writes back into history, reclaiming voices and reshaping narratives.
